Mexico – Frustrating 2021 can motivate El Tri?

El Tri’s bid to qualify for an eighth consecutive World Cup begins in Mexico City on Thursday, where they will welcome Jamaica before rounding off the September international break with two further qualifiers against Canada and Honduras. Once those matches have reached completion, Mexico will have played a grand total of seventeen fixtures in a bumper 2021 comprising Nations League, Gold Cup and WC Qualifying.

So far this year, Mexico have won a lot more than they’ve lost: W8 D3 L3. Two of those defeats were to the same opposition, losing to the United States after extra-time in the final of both the Nations League and Gold Cup. The latter snapping their four-game winning streak and eight-match unbeaten run. Coach Gerado Martino is, however, boosted by the return of talismanic forward Raul Jimenez.

Key Stat: Gerado Martino’s Mexico have conceded on two occasions across their previous seven internationals, with Mexico & Under 3.5 Goals landing in all but one of eight victories in 2021.

Jamaica – Reggae Boyz out to build on Gold Cup efforts?

The Reggae Boyz have had to absorb a hit in the latest update to the FIFA rankings, dropping to 50th on the back of a largely disappointing 2021 to date (W2 D1 L4). However, an encouraging performance at the summer’s Gold Cup tournament should give them the belief that they can compete for one of four automatic qualifying positions. As they aim to make their first World Cup appearance since France 98′.

Jamaica begun the year in wretched fashion, though, allowing nine goals through contests with the Japanese Under-23 side, Serbia and USA. They restored a little pride at the recently held Gold Cup, however. Theodore Whitmore’s men won two out of three group stage matches on their way to the quarter-finals, conceding seven minutes from the end in their 1-0 loss to eventual winners the United States.

Key Stat: Since shipping nine goals in their first three matches of 2021, Jamaica have conceded three in their past four combined.

Mexico Vs Jamaica Betting Advice

Whereas the hosts are boosted considerably by the long awaited return from injury of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Raul Jimenez, who will be looking to add to his 27 goals on what would be his 87th appearance for the senior side, Jamaica must do without theirs. West Ham’s Michail Antonio has committed to Jamaica but has only made himself available for Sunday’s home match up with Panama.

Mexico Vs Jamaica – Key Facts:

  • After three successive defeats between 2013 and 2016, Jamaica have since remained unbeaten (W1 D1) in match ups with Mexico, winning the last of those 1-0 in July 2017.
  • Mexico have conceded just the two goals in their last seven matches combined, recording seven consecutive clean sheets at one stage this year.
  • Goals could be at a premium. Under 2.5 Goals returned in six of the last seven meetings between the sides, while Both Teams To Score landed in only one of the last ten.

Mexico are deservedly favourites after a strong year overall, reaching both finals of the CONCACAF Nations League and Gold Cup. Just two conceded in their last seven, winning to nil on five occasions, shows how tough it will be for the visitors. Although, the Reggage Boyz did avoid defeat in this fixture the last two times (W1 D1). Meanwhile, only one of the past ten head-to-heads featured both teams among the goals.
