Michael van Gerwen Preview – Can MVG win top-two clash

This is a mouth-watering clash coming up between Van Gerwen and Durrant who are level at the top of the table with 10 points each.

Van Gerwen powered his way to a 7-3 revenge win over Michael Smith last night, giving him back to back wins in the league.

He is W5 L2 overall for the campaign, the reverses happening against Nathan Aspinall and Michael Smith.

Now the really interesting thing here is that Michael van Gerwen has lost his two previous matches against Durrant.

The first of those was in Barnsley last year in the Players Championship and then later in the same year at the World Matchplay.

Van Gerwen just looked back to his best on Tuesday and he is now the only player in this season’s Premier League to have a three-figure 3-dart average.

It is a 101 3-dart average that the Dutchman has produced in this campaign.

He has also tallied the second-highest amount of 180s this season as well. But can he crack Durrant in a fascinating showdown?

Whoever wins this has to be in the driving seat to secure a top-four finish at the end of the campaign, probably top spot too.

It is a W4 D2 L1 record from Glen Durrant in what is his Premier League debut season.

He is unbeaten in three now. On Tuesday he faced a very tough return as he was up against reigning world Champion Peter Wright.

Durrant stuck in there and picked up a point in a draw against the Scotsman.

The Englishman is still the only player in the Premier League this season yet to have reached double figures for 180’s tallied.

It has been only the nine from him which pales in comparison to the 21 that Mighty Mike has produced.

But then Durrant beats MVG’s stats in 100+ scores and 140+ scores, so there has been a lot of consistent scoring from Durrant.

Glen Durrant took a 13-11 win over Michael van Gerwen at the World Matchplay last year, a seismic victory.

In this year’s edition of the World matchplay in July he ran to the semi-finals of the tournament.

He has also shown that he is a dab hand at this Premier League format, so he may have some appeal to punters as the 4/1 underdog for the win* (odds taken 21:12 GMT, Tuesday 25th August).
