It has been business as usual for reigning Premier League darts champion Michael van Gerwen. It has been two wins from two for him so far in this season’s tournament. Next up to face him is debutant Nathan Aspinall, who had a setback last week.

MVG in the groove early

Michael van Gerwen is just prolific when it comes to Premier League Darts. It’s not often that he doesn’t deliver.

He started the new season with a tight 7-5 victory over current World Champion Peter Wright. That was a big hurdle to get over straight out of the blocks.

Then last week he laid down more dominance as he crushed Daryl Gurney 7-1. In his two matches so far Micahel van Gerwen has taken 104 and 105 three-dart average.

That’s pretty much just unplayable. In last season’s competition, he only lost three of his sixteen regular-season matches.

Our betting prediction:
Van Gerwen 7-4 correct score
3/1

Michael van Gerwen has met Nathan Aspinall five times before. The Dutchman holds a W3 L2 record against Aspinall. Four of the five meetings happened last year.

The most recent of those was just back on December 12th at the World Championship when MVG took a 6-3 win over the Asp.

The way the head to head has gone, the two have alternated wins, starting with MVG.

Can Aspinall pull off the upset?

This is the first season on the Premier League darts circuit for Nathan Aspinall. He is a player on the rise in the PDC and he opened his account comfortably. He was up against “challenger” John Henderson in Aberdeen on week 1 of action.

It was a comfortable ride for him and last week he was involved in a tough scrap with last year’s runner up Rob Cross.

Aspinall edged the three-dart average against Cross but just couldn’t find that extra clinical touch to check out. It was only a narrow 7-5 defeat that he suffered though and it was a good indication that he is going to be competitive in the league.

It is a format that newcomers find hard to adjust too. But Aspinall has been to the semi-finals of the last two televised events (World Championships and Masters) and with a close head to head record against MVG then he will feel like he has nothing to lose.
