Middlesbrough Preview – Can ‘Boro record a first home league win of 2020 to boost their hopes of staying up?

Neil Warnock was brought in to take over at Middlesbrough with one objective in mind which is to steer them to safety. It’s a managerial selection in complete contrast to Jonathan Woodgate who Warnock has replaced. However, the owner sought to act to ensure that ‘Boro don’t fall into the third tier of English football. Warnock has been in charge for four games and has won two and lost two so far.

In keeping with how Middlesbrough’s season has went recently, both wins under Warnock have come away from home. The win against Millwall on Wednesday has pulled ‘Boro out the relegation zone and two points clear.

 

 

The margins are so fine at the bottom of the Championship. From 17th down there are just five points separating six teams. The pressure going into every game for each of the teams involved is huge due to that and Warnock will be well aware as he prepares his team for tomorrow’s game.

‘Boro are yet to win a game at home this calendar year – a run which stretches back eight games. They have lost four in that time including their last two. They’ve also failed to score in four of their last five matches at the Riverside.

A season that promised so much at one point is going to deliver precious little for Bristol City. The Robins have waved goodbye to Lee Johnson as manager, ending a four year spell in charge. His departure comes after Bristol City went nine matches without a win – a run that included seven defeats. Their hopes of a top six finish came crashing down and they will now do will to finish in the top half.

It’s been a criticism levelled at City for a number of seasons, and despite the ambition of the club they still seem unable to close at the business end of the campaign.

Dean Holden will take charge of the team for the remaining games and got off to a winning start when beating Hull 2-1 during the week. The next challenge for Holden is attempting to win a game away from home, something City havent done since the 1st of February.

Since the win over QPR at Loftus Road, Bristol City have lost four and drawn one. They have scored only two goals in that time. This is their penultimate away game of the season with a trip to Swansea still to come.

 

The teams shared the points when meeting at Ashton Gate back in August. It seems somewhat illogical to be back a team to win considering they have such a poor record at home but Middlesbrough have shown enough in games under Warnock to suggest they can get a much needed win here and ease their relegation fears.
