Middlesbrough – Wilder’s side seeking another major scalp?

After frustrating results away to Millwall and Sheffield United, drawing 0-0 with the former but losing 4-1 against the latter, Chris Wilder’s side chose the perfect time to return to winning ways in midweek. Four days ahead of their first FA Cup quarter-final for five years, ‘Boro went and produced a first away victory of 2022 as they confidently dispatched Birmingham 2-0 at St Andrews without conceding a shot on target.

The last time the club made the competition’s last four was 2005/06, so it was understandable they should dig their heels in at Chelsea’s request for this tie to be played without any fans in attendance. Playing in front of this raucous Riverside crowd will be a huge boost as well. Middlesbrough have won eight successive Championship home games and beat Tottenham in extra-time at this ground in the round prior.

Key Stat: Middlesbrough have already claimed two Premier League scalps on route to the FA Cup quarter-finals. Having beaten Manchester United on penalties at Old Trafford in the fourth round, Boro then overcame Tottenham 1-0 in extra-time at the Riverside.

Chelsea – Blues honing in on yet another FA Cup final?

As an eight-time former winner, having reached the final in four of the past five seasons, it is fair to say Chelsea boast arguably the most formidable pedigree of the eight teams still standing in this year’s tournament. We also expected more for a club of such stature than what we witnessed this week, as an attempt to have this tie played behind closed doors was met with widespread derision – especially on Teesside.

Consequently, Chelsea can expect a hostile reception at the Riverside. Not that this is expected to unduly bother a team currently unbeaten across all twelve competitive fixtures (W8 D4) since a 1-0 scoreline away to Premier League leaders Man City on 18 January. Meanwhile, only the aforementioned Man City boast a better points return away from home in the English top-flight this term than Tuchel’s men (W10 D3 L2).

Key Stat: Chelsea are notorious for running a tight ship defensively under Thomas Tuchel, but in the FA Cup they still await their first clean sheet of the season, conceding to each of Chesterfield, Plymouth Argyle and Luton.

Middlesbrough Vs Chelsea Betting Advice

If Middlesbrough can maintain their current trajectory in the Championship, this could very well be a precursor for next season’s meeting in the Premier League. Boro have already demonstrated their ability to hold their own against this level of opposition, accounting for Manchester United and Tottenham in the fourth and fifth rounds respectively. A slightly ominous prospect then for Chelsea?

Middlesbrough Vs Chelsea – Key Facts:

  • Chelsea have won eight matches in a row, by an aggregate score of 19-0, since Middlesbrough’s last head-to-head victory. That being their 2-1 home win in a Premier League encounter in August 2006.
  • However, the Blues are yet to register a clean sheet in this season’s FA Cup. They have, however, won each of their last four away matches domestically, two of which being to nil.
  • Middlesbrough are no pushovers, though, in particular when playing at the Riverside Stadium. Boro are currently enjoying an eight-game winning run when playing at home in the Championship.

Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea team have made hard work of reaching a fifth FA Cup quarter-final in six seasons. They needed extra-time to see off the spirited challenge of League One Plymouth, while plucky Luton of the Championship twice took the lead at Kenilworth Road only to be undone late on. Chelsea are masters at grinding it out, though. Therefore it wouldn’t be at all surprising were they to sneak through to the final four.
