Midtjylland will clinch the Superliga title if they avoid defeat against current champions Copenhagen should they avoid defeat on Thursday, with the visitors desperate to make their opponents wait.

Midtjylland Preview – Can leaders get the point they require to clinch their third title?

It’s only a matter of time before Midtjylland land their third title and second in two seasons but they will hope to clinch it in style against the rival who they have competed with for the past few years. Currently 14 points with five games left to play, the leaders need only a point to confirm what we’ve known for some time. A goal from captain Erik Sviatchekno in the final minute against Nordsjaelland at the weekend combined with a defeat for their opponents sent this possibility up.

Since football returned in Denmark Midtjylland have struggled at home, however. Their three matches have seen them take just one point with defeats against Horsens and AGF. Before that they had lost two at home all season.

Midtjylland got in front early in the title race and they have not looked back. Brian Priske, who only took charge of the club last year, has done a terrific job to maintain the consistency and level of performance that has them on the cusp. Priske was also in charge of the club back in 2015 when they won their first ever title.

There’s no secret to why they are where they are. Midtjylland have the best defensive record in the Superliga, conceding only 19 goals. Opponents Copenhagen have the second best defensive record which is 15 more.

Copenhagen Preview – Can Copenhagen bounce back to form and spoil the title party?

It’s been a really disappointing title defence for Copenhagen who have failed to get close to Midtjylland at any point this season. Even taking it back to last August when they were eliminated in the third round of qualifiers they have just not been able to hit the heights that Stale Solbakken would have hoped for. The one consolation this campaign has been their progress in the Europa League which they will resume at the start of August, trying to overturn a 1-0 first leg defeat.

These remaining five league games will be an opportunity for Copenhagen to find some form before that competition resumes.

Copenhagen have lost their last two games to end any hope of a miraculous comeback. A defeat at home to this opponent was followed by another loss against third place AGF last time out. It means they have won only one of their last five matches. That will be extremely frustrating for Solbakken as Midtjylland have shown some vulnerability of late and Copenhagen have been unable to take advantage.

The fact that Copenhagen have been able to keep just one clean sheet in their last 12 matches is indicative of their failings. They are, however, the second top scorers in the league.

Although Midtjylland have struggled for form at home they will be up for this game knowing that a point will secure the title. They will also take confidence from having beaten Copenhagen twice already including just a couple of weeks ago, and I’m taking them to wrap the league up in style with all three points.
