Midtjylland Preview – Danish side saving their best for last?

When the draw was made, the consensus was that Rasmus Ankersen and his side would find it incredibly difficult to even register a point, let alone do enough to involve themselves in the shake-up for the qualifying berths. They can at least hold their heads up high knowing the former was achieved, earning the club its first ever point in their maiden Champions League campaign last week in Italy.

Holding last season’s losing quarter-finalists, Atalanta, to a 1-1 draw away from home is no small feat. Midtjylland (D1 L4) deserve immense credit therefore, not only for how they performed last time out, when they were 11 minutes from securing a famous victory after Alexander Scholz had given them an early lead, but their application throughout. The Danish champions have grown into the tournament.

Since losing 4-0 on Matchday 1 at home to Atalanta, Midtjylland have pushed Ajax close in Denmark whilst also making Liverpool work extremely hard for their 2-0 scoreline at Anfield. However, only once, in defeat here to the Dutch side, have they not been easily beaten on xG. Their memorable result last time heavily reliant on their opponents scoring only once from chances equating to 2.39 xG.

Liverpool Preview – Opportunity beckons for those on fringes?

There could be a decidedly second string look to the Liverpool (W4 L1) team sent out by manager Jurgen Klopp for this final game in Group D. The Reds are already guaranteed top spot, after winning four of five fixtures thus far, and are therefore under no obligation to win in Denmark. Klopp has also seldom passed up the opportunity to rotate when the situation presents itself and nobody expects the German to do so here.

As such, bookmakers have acted accordingly and made the English champions available at odds-against for their trip to Denmark. Not a bad price, as let’s not forget there are few better motivational managers around than Klopp, who will have his makeshift team fired up from the outset in the hope they can secure a fifth group stage victory. Liverpool as a club have never previously managed more than four before.

The Reds can also become only the third English side to win all three away group games without conceding a goal, having beaten Ajax (0-1) and Atalanta – teams vying for the second qualifying berth – both to nil in the Netherlands and Italy respectively. However Liverpool haven’t always convinced during this campaign, particularly in the reverse of this fixture at Anfield when a breakthrough didn’t arrive until the 55th minute.

Midtjylland Vs Liverpool Betting Advice

Although we can expect a much-changed Liverpool side from the one that has featured regularly in the group stage until now, this is a hungry squad vying for Klopp’s acclaim. The German has had to utilise the full spectrum of his squad this season due to a seemingly ever expanding list of injuries, and so those who perform well in Denmark won’t be doing their chances of further action over the hectic festive season any harm.

Midtjylland Vs Liverpool – Key Facts:

  • After losing their first four games in Group D by a 2-11 aggregate, Midtjylland would register their first ever Champions League point with a 1-1 draw against Atalanta in Italy.
  • Liverpool can become only the third English side to record a 100% away record in the group stage whilst also not conceding a single away goal.
  • The first ever meeting between the clubs took place on Matchday 2, Liverpool grinding out a 2-0 scoreline at Anfield through goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah.

Midtjylland have done well, to an extent, to keep their scorelines competitive thus far, and can take heart from their draw with Atalanta last time. An excellent opportunity to record their first Champions League win beckons against what many of us expect will be a makeshift Liverpool. However, there will still be enough proven quality and experience within the ranks of the visitors to see Group D out on a winning note.
