Italian Serie A

Preview: There should be a spring in the step of both sides ahead of Sunday’s early showdown at the San Siro. AC Milan have toiled as hosts of late, though, and so may struggle to live up to their billing as strong pre-match favourites against Sampdoria.

AC Milan – Rossoneri primed for Serie A summit?

With the top two facing off against each other in Naples later that same evening, AC Milan know they will improve upon a position of third coming into the round provided they show zero complacency at home to Sampdoria. They could even end the weekend out on top should Napoli and Inter fail to produce a winner. So there is certainly no lack of motivation, while confidence will be high after a memorable week already.

An inspired performance from Olivier Giroud saw the Rossoneri overcome a first-half deficit to win the Milan derby, as the Frenchman continued his love affair at the San Siro having scored all seven of his league goals there. Four days later they eased into the Coppa Italia semi-finals, dismantling Lazio at this same venue – which does make you wonder how they’ve only won twice here across their last seven in Serie A (D2 L3).

Key Stat: It is one clean sheet in seven home league games coming into Sunday for AC Milan, with that rare shutout coming via a 0-0 draw with Juventus on 23 January.

Sampdoria – La Samp buoyed by Sassuolo mauling?

Victory last weekend at home to Sassuolo did, at the very least, halt the rot, and what a way in which to do so. Having been winless in six, including four straight defeats coming into the game, for La Samp to rack up a 4-0 scoreline caught everyone by surprise, not least the opposition. Racing into a 2-0 lead inside seven minutes, Marco Giampaolo’s men simply never looked back with Antonio Candreva influential throughout.

Candreva scored one – a lovely panenka penalty to complete the rout – and assisted a further two to leave him rather neatly on seven goals and as many assists for the season. However, those four goals were as many as in their six league games prior (D2 L4). Scoring once across their last three away encounters (D1 L2 vs Napoli, Roma and Spezia) since a 3-1 win away to second-bottom Genoa in December.

Key Stat: Away from home Sampdoria have only beaten three teams all season, with these teams ranked 11th, 19th and 20th at the start of this latest round.

AC Milan Vs Sampdoria Betting Advice

Brahim Diaz’s ninth minute goal was the only thing separating the sides earlier in the season, with Milan fortunate to escape Stadio Luigi Ferraris with a point after losing the xG battle on the day. It was a similarly close affair in last season’s corresponding fixture as Milan rescued a point late on to draw 1-1 at San Siro. We should probably also mention Milan having a midweek fixture, albeit they looked mighty impressive.

AC Milan Vs Sampdoria – Key Facts:

  • Recent encounters between the teams have been closely-fought affairs. AC Milan winning this season’s only meeting 1-0 away but drawing the last twice as hosts (0-0 in 2019-20, 1-1 in 2020-21).
  • Milan have won two of the last seven Serie A home games, conceding in six (D2 L3). Samporia are winless in three on the road, scoring once (D1 L2).
  • Both sides come into the contest having scored exactly four in their most recent games: AC Milan thrashing Lazio 4-0 in the cup in midweek and Sampdoria beating Sassuolo by the same score.

After successive wins over Inter and Lazio, momentum is clearly with Milan who have the added incentive of knowing a third straight will see them go top for a few hours at least. Yet it is just two wins in seven Serie A home games (D2 L3) having conceded in all but one of these games. They’ve also failed to win the last two home league games vs Sampdoria (D2), the latter no doubt buoyed by their four-goal exploits last weekend.
