One of the standout ties from the first round of the EFL Cup is Tuesday night’s encounter at The Den between EFL Championship Millwall and EFL League One Portsmouth. These two clubs have had several ding-dong battles over the years, but this will be the first meeting between these two famous English sides since April 2012, when Harry Kane netted in a 1-0 Millwall win. Who can get the victory in south London on Tuesday and book their spot in round two?

Millwall Preview – Lions to roar through to round two?

Gary Rowett’s Millwall kicked off their 2021-22 Championship season with a handy draw at Queens Park Rangers last weekend. Jed Wallace opened the scoring in the 11th minute, but Rob Dickie levelled for the Hoops just after the half-hour mark. The 1-1 stalemate was a fair result at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

Millwall’s Championship season continues this Saturday with a home match against Tony Mowbray’s Blackburn Rovers, who won their opener against Swansea City. Millwall then face Fulham and Cardiff City in the following two. Like a whole host of clubs in this season’s Championship, the Londoners will be aiming for the top six.

Our betting prediction:
Millwall to win & both teams to score

Before thinking about the game with Blackburn at The Den, Millwall need to navigate past Portsmouth in the cup, which will not be an easy task. Nevertheless, the home win is priced at evens.

Portsmouth Preview – Can Pompey upset Millwall at The Den?

Portsmouth once again missed out on promotion last season. They did not even make the play-offs this time, finishing in eighth. However, there were certainly positive signs under Danny Cowley, who took over at Fratton Park in March.

Pompey started their League One campaign with an excellent win on the road. Lee Brown’s 60th-minute strike was enough for a 1-0 victory at Fleetwood Town. Next up for Portsmouth in League One is a home match with Crewe Alexandra this Saturday.

As is often the case, Portsmouth started the season as one of the pre-season promotion favourites. Reaching the Championship is the priority, but can Pompey have a decent run in the EFL Cup?

Millwall vs Portsmouth Betting Advice

Millwall and Portsmouth have not gone head-to-head since a Championship affair back in April 2012. During the 2011-12 season, the Lions did the double over Pompey, winning 1-0 at The Den and 1-0 at Fratton Park. Portsmouth’s last victory over the London outfit was over a decade ago.

Key Facts – Millwall vs Portsmouth Betting Tip

  • Millwall finished 11th in the Championship last term
  • Portsmouth missed out on the League One play-offs last season, finishing in eighth
  • The pair have not met since 2012

The Den is never an easy place to go, especially now the fans are back. However, Cowley’s Pompey will be looking forward to Tuesday’s game, and it could be closer than you think. Having said that, Championship Millwall should just edge it. We like the look of the home team to win by one goal at 3/1.

Jed Wallace opened his account last week by netting the opening goal at QPR. Wallace scored 11 Championship goals last season. The 27-year-old will be keen to add to his strike last week, and Millwall’s No. 7 is available at 6/1 to score first here.
