MK Dons Preview – Can Dons use this competition to return to some better form?

Russell Martin is the man who MK Dons have entrusted to lead them to safety in League One in what is seen as a risk considering this is his first ever coaching job. Martin has taken the decision to retire from playing to give his full attention to this new role and and it’s a massive job he has ahead of him. His first game in charge ended in disappointment as the Dons crashed out of the FA Cup a home to Port Vale from the league below. That loss means it’s now six games without a win in all competitions and their only victory in the last 13 attempts came in this competition when defeating the Fulham youngsters 1-0 back at the start of October. Martin will be hoping to use this game against Wycombe with a view to instilling some confidence and belief within his squad.

A real problem for MK Dons this season has been in front of goal. It’s just 13 goals in 16 league games giving them the second lowest total behind bottom club Bolton. The EFL trophy has provided some respite in that they have won both matches, but the 3-0 win away to Stevenage back in September seems an awful long time ago. Scoring just one goal in their last seven matches tells it’s own story and it makes Tuesday’s game more significant than it may have been in other circumstances.

Under 2.5 goals

Wycombe Preview – Will Wycombe bow out from the EFL Trophy with their first win of the group?

It’s a complete role reversal in terms of Wycombe’s season as they fly high at the top of the table in League One but have bottomed out in the EFL Trophy and are already eliminated ahead of playing their final group game. Now in his eighth season in charge of the club, Gareth Ainsworth is also at the opposite end of the spectrum in terms of experience compared to Martin. There’s no doubting that Wycombe have prioritised promotion over progress in this competition and it’s easy to see why. Although this trophy provides an opportunity to play at Wemblye, the opportunity to play in the second tier of English football for the first time in the club’s history is a much more attractive proposition.

Teams such as Wycombe are working with such small squads that they cannot compete across all competitions. Home defeats against Fulham U21 and Stevenage mean there is no way in which they can progress from the group. Instead, attention turns to a big game away to Tranmere in the league on Sunday – a team who they drew 2-2 with on Saturday in the FA Cup.

Key-Facts – MK Dons vs Wycombe

  • Russell Martin has taken charge of MK Dons with the aim of lifting the club out the League One relegation zone
  • Whilst Wycombe are flying in League One their participation in this competition will come to an end after Tuesday’s game
  • It was Wycombe who came out on top when these teams met in the league back in August

MK Dons v Wycombe Betting Advice

This may be something of a dead rubber in terms of the group but it’s a game that has more significance for MK Dons than Wycombe considering their struggles of late. Wycombe will move on to League One action at the weekend in buoyant mood regardless of what happens tomorrow but for their hosts another defeat just adds to their anxiety and deplete their confidence further.

It was victory for Wycombe when the two sides met in the league back in August in a game they won 3-2. It’s not usually a wise strategy to bet on speculation but in these circumstances I’m willing to take a chance of the home team. Martin will be targeting this game with a view to getting that first win out the way. Wycome are already out and they will be look ahead to more important games.
