Molde Preview – Will Molde transfer their excellent domestic form into European action?

Molde are well into their domestic season and it’s been a really positive campaign to date as they sit top of the table with a five point lead over the current champions. Considering they finished second and 19 points behind Bodo / Glimt last season it’s been a significant turnaround already and one which they will be determined to sustain as they go in search of their second title in three years. They’ve not been out the top two in any of the last five seasons, either.

Erling Moe has been in charge since 2018 and overseeing this improvement, both domestically and in Europe. Molde qualified from the group stage of a European competition last season when reaching the last-16 of the Europa League. Their participation was ended narrowly by Granada when losing 3-2 on aggregate but it’s run which should give them great confidence.

The highlight was the last-32 win against Hoffenheim but Molde showed up with great credit throughout the run having just missed out on making the group stages of the Champions League. They finished second in their section and their only losses in the group stage came against Arsenal.

Ohi Omoijuanfo has been a key player for the last two seasons and a prolific scorer for Molde. He managed four goals in European competition last year and is already on 15 league goals for this campaign.

Servette Preview – Can Servette remain in the tie ahead of the return game next week?

Having finished fourth on their return to the Swiss top-flight in 2019/20, Servette went one better last season by pipping Lugano to third place and qualifying for European competition. Servette were eliminated from Europa League qualification I the second round so they will be hoping to prolong their stay this time around and reach the group stages of this new competition.

Alain Geiger has overseen their rise to be one of the best in Switzerland and he knows that as well as maintaining their place domestically, they now have to translate that into the European arena.

Servette’s league campaign starts this weekend so they will be some way behind their opponents in terms of match fitness, despite having played four friendly games. The most recent two of those coming against Marseille and Dynamo Kiev which will have at least given them a test against quality sides.

Gael Clichy will be familiar to Premier League supporters. The former Arsenal and Manchester City defender is in his second season at Servette and provides much needed experience. Alex Schalk – who had a spell in Scotland with Ross County –combined with Grejohn Kyei for 22 goals in the league last season and you suspect they will both be important players if Servette are to play European football beyond this round.

Molde vs Servette Betting Advice

Molde had their best ever season in European competition last time around and they will be looking to build on that this time around in this new competition. Their opponents are much more inexperienced and will be hoping to put on a better showing than the last campaign.

Whoever progresses from this tie will face a difficult match in the third qualifier as they take on Turkish outfit Trabzonspor.

Key Facts – Molde vs Servette Betting Tip

  • Molde reached the last-16 of the Europa League in 2020/21, eventually losing to Granada
  • Servette were eliminated in the second qualifying round of the Europa League last season
  • The winners of this game will face Trabzonspor in the third round of qualification

It’s hard to get away from Molde’s good showing last season with what is essentially the same squad. They’re also not only into their domestic season but are in excellent form as well. They should be good enough to travel to Switzerland with a lead next week.
