Austria play their first game since that extra-time loss to Italy in the European Championships as they travel to Moldova on the hunt for World Cup qualifying points.

Moldova Preview – Will Moldova pick up an extremely rare win and their first of this section?

As one of the minnows of the European scene Moldova are always going to struggle in these qualification groups and this section for next year’s World Cup is no different. Three games into qualifying and they find themselves on one point – that coming in the first match when drawing at home to the Faroes Islands. The fact that is their best chance of a win will not be lost on Roberto Bordin who has been in charge of the national team since February of this year.

Their other two matches don’t make pleasant reading after an 8-0 thumping defeat in Denmark followed by a 4-1 loss at home to Israel. Moldova also played two friendly games in June. A 2-0 defeat to Turkey followed by a 1-0 win at home to Azerbaijan.

Our betting prediction
Under 2.5 goals
(odds taken 2000 GMT, Monday 30 August)

The win last time out is Moldova’s first in 11 home games. Their last home win came over two years ago against Andorra. They’ve since loss six and drawn four. That included their participation in the UEFA Nations League where they finished bottom after gaining just one point.

Moldova will travel to Scotland after this game before the return match with the Faroes. If they can gain anything from these games it would be a morale boosting achievement heading into the latter part of this group.

Austria Preview – Can Austria build on a good showing at the Euros to enhance chances of World Cup qualification?

Franco Foda has been in charge of Austria for nearly four years. The German was appointed after failure to reach the 2018 World Cup with the objective of attempting to reach both the next World Cup and Euro 2020. The latter of those has been achieved with Austria losing 2-1 to eventual winners Italy after extra-time in their round of 16 clash.

Austria had defeated both North Macedonia and Ukraine to qualify from their section, despite a 2-0 loss to the Netherlands. Foda also led Austria to the top of their Nations League Group which wins them win promotion to the top league.

Their start to this qualification campaign has not been as positive, however. After three games Austria have taken four points and that sees them sit off the pace in Group F behind Denmark, Scotland and Israel. An opening round 2-2 draw away to Scotland was followed by a 3-1 win against the Faroes but Denmark put them firmly in their place with a 4-0 win in Vienna.

This group of qualifiers is an opportunity for Austria to make up points as they host Scotland following a trip to Israel. Both of whom are rivals for qualification.

Moldova vs Austria Betting Advice

This is the third time the nations have been drawn against each other in recent years. Austria have dominated in that time with four straight wins including in the last World Cup qualification run. Moldova have managed just one goal across those four matches but will take some belief from the fact that they have been competitive enough in each of them.

Key Facts – Moldova vs Austria Betting Tip

  • Moldova sit bottom the section with just one point from three games and conceding 13 goals in the process
  • Austria have work to do if they are to qualify for the 2022 World Cup with one win in their first three qualifiers
  • The teams have met four times in the last seven years with Austria winning each of them

Austria have had another taste of the European Championships but they’ve not made it to a World Cup since 1982. If they are to change that then this is a must win game. Moldova will prove to be stubborn but I expect the visitors to return home with all three points after keeping a clean sheet.
