Win this game and Scotland will clinch a playoff spot from Group F. Moldova – who have one point from eight matches – stand in their way in the penultimate round of qualifiers.

Moldova Preview – Can Moldova spring a huge shock to collect their first win of the campaign?

Moldova sit bottom of the section and look likely to finish in that position unless they can pick up a win in their final two games. One point from eight games paints a pretty bleak position but it’s not one that is surprising. Their last competitive win is over two years ago now and they have only been successful in one friendly during that time. Their only point in this campaign has come against the Faroe Islands who they have also lost to more recently.

They’ve failed to score in five of their eight qualifiers which again is indicative of where this team is, managing four goals in their eight group matches.

Added to that, only Gibraltar and San Marino have conceded more goals at this stage of qualifying. Moldova concede on average three goals a game and with games against Scotland and a visit to Austria to come that could yet rise.

The aim coming into this campaign would have been to finish above above Faroe Islands. It looks like that is beyond them but they will be hoping to get some positive result from their remaining two games.

Scotland Preview – Are Scotland set to get the result which would guarantee them second spot and through to the playoffs?

Having reached their first major international tournament in over 20 years when qualifying for Euro 2020, Steve Clarke’s Scotland are within a game of ensuring they are in with a chance of making a second straight finals. The Scots sit second in the group and need a win here to guarantee them as runners up where they will enter a playoff which will take the form of a semi-final and if successful, final. The last time Scotland reached a World Cup was 1998 so it’s a long time coming but Clarke will be well aware that there is a lot to do before they can start thinking about that.

Scotland will complete their campaign with a home game against runaway leaders Denmark so they will be wanting to avoid needing a win in that match.

Scotland have late goals against both Israel and Faroe Islands in the last international break to thank for the position they are in. It means they have now won four consecutive, competitive matches for the first time since 2007. They’ve not won five in a row since 1972! So they are on the brink of a making some history.

Clarke will be pleased with his team’s defensive performance of late. Scotland have kept three clean sheets in their last four games and their concession of seven goals is by far and a way the second best defensive record in the group.

Moldova vs Scotland Betting Advice

It’s crunch time for Scotland. They are in a great position to finish in second place but there is still work to do. Scotland have been in similar positions before and fallen at the last hurdle, most notably against Georgia, so they won’t be taking anything for granted.

Moldova are just hoping to get some sort of performance and result that they can take confidence from after what has been a pretty wretched group.

Key Facts – Moldova vs Scotland Betting Tip

  • Moldova sit bottom of the group with their solitary point coming against the Faroe Islands
  • Scotland are looking for a fifth straight win in the section, and that would guarantee them second place
  • The Scots were narrow 1-0 winners when the teams met in Glasgow back in September

Scotland have managed to find a way to win games in recent months and I expect them to do the same here. They’ve won four of their five wins in this section without conceding and I suggest taking them to do similar again.
