Monaco – Ben Yeddar to the fore for Kovac?

With all three teams above them securing maximum points last time out, it meant Monaco (W17 D4 L7), beaten at the death by Strasbourg, lost vital ground in both the race for the title and the Champions League places. The Principality side reside four points off third-place Lyon, while leaders Lille are seven points better off than Niko Kovac’s men, who would at least make it a swift return to winning ways next time out.

Last Monday’s 2-0 triumph in Nice in the Coupe de France was possibly a sign their were no ill-effects from losing to Strasbourg, who scored the only goal of a game deprived of quality in second-half time added on. That was easily Monaco’s worst display in quite some time, creating a paltry 0.45 worth of xG at the Stade de la Meinau, with that figure their lowest since Matchday 2 when creating 0.18 xG in a 1-0 win over Metz.

Prior to that recent defeat, Monaco had chalked up 11 Ligue 1 matches without losing, winning nine, so were in exceptional form not that long ago. Meanwhile, they remain unbeaten here, inside their Stade Louis II, in six (W4), netting at least twice in each. France international Wissam Ben Yeddar scored a brace in two of the last three home league games and has netted in three of his five appearances versus Lille.

Lille – Can Les Douges secure eighth straight away success?

If Lille (W18 D8 L2) were beginning to feel the pressure of leading out this intriguing Ligue 1 title race at the head of the pack, it certainly didn’t show in their latest league outing, that in a rousing 2-0 victory at home to Marseille. A contest Christophe Galtier’s side dominated from the outset, limiting a capable but inconsistent L’OM to 0.12 xG at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, with the hosts (2.37 xG) clearly not holding back.

That win was followed by another, in the Coupe de France, as Lille eased past inferior opposition in the shape of GFC Ajaccio last Friday. Nevertheless, it maintains their positive moment. Les Douges were recently beaten home and away in their Europa League Round of 32 tie with Dutch side Ajax but remain unbeaten domestically since the first week of January, when they were surprisingly beaten 2-1 at home by Angers.

Les Douges have gone undefeated on the domestic front ever since, registering 26 of a possible 30 points in Ligue 1. In fact, their only dropped points in this time have come at their Stade Pierre-Mauroy. Away from home, Galtier’s charges are in imperious form, recording seven straight Ligue 1 away victories, five of those coming to nil, having conceded just once across their previous five away outings.

Monaco Vs Lille Betting Advice

Separated by seven points, fourth hosts top in France as Monaco look to rein in the Ligue 1 leaders at Stade Louis II. It is where Niko Kovac’s side can boast of four wins from their past six Ligue 1 outings (D2), scoring at least twice in each. The visitors, however, will take some stopping themselves: Lille have won seven on the spin away from home, while only one of their past five hosts breached this miserly defence.

Monaco Vs Lille – Key Facts:

  • Nine of the past eleven competitive meetings between these clubs featured three or more goals. Lille are without a win as the visiting side, though, in seven attempts in Ligue 1 (D4 L3).
  • Monaco have won four of their last six Ligue 1 home matches (D2), netting two or more in all six. The majority of their goals in this period (9/14) were scored in the second half.
  • Lille have won seven successive away Ligue 1 games, five of them to nil, and have scored in all thirteen away league games in 2020-21.

As formidable a rearguard as Lille’s evidently is, I think the fact this is being played on Monaco territory – where they average more than two goals per game in 2020-21 – lends itself to this being a lively encounter. Meetings between the sides typically are, meanwhile: nine of the previous eleven in league and cup produced three or more match goals, with Monaco triumphing 5-1 in last season’s corresponding fixture.
