The tie of the round in the Coupe de la Ligue sees an improving Monaco team entertain Lille for a place in the quarter-finals. This is the first of a double-header with the teams also facing each other in league action at the weekend.

Monaco Preview – Can Monaco continue their recent resurgence and move into the next round at Lille’s expense?

Things were looking ominous for Leonardo Jardim and his Monaco team when failing to win any of their first six in Ligue 1. A narrow escape from relegation fresh in everybody’s memory, there needed to be improvement, and quickly. To Jardim’s credit, he has been able to find that improvement and in recent times the club have begun moving up the table. Runs of four wins in five league games and more recently one defeat in the same number of games see Monaco sit in ninth spot and just a couple of points outside the top six. Of course, they will want to be challenging for Europe as a minimum. But considering how bad their start was, things are definitely looking up.

Barring PSG, it could barely have been a harder draw for Monaco in this round and it was the same in the previous stage. The Monte-Carlo faced Marseille back in October, a game they won 2-1 at home. They now come up against the team directly below that rival. Being at home once again could be pivotal for Jardim and his players. Monaco have won their last six at home and it’s been the foundation for their improved form.

Lille Preview – Will Lille show their class and make it five wins in a row in domestic competitions?

Their Champions League participation may not have gone how they planned but Lille are once again showing they are a top team in France. Heading to the halfway stage of the domestic season and the club occupy third spot, four points behind Marseille with PSG well out in front. Their current position is in large part down to how well they have done over the last month. Lille have won their last four games in the league, including a crucial 1-0 victory away to Lyon. It is a run that was much needed having won only three of 11 before then in Ligue 1. Christophe Galtier (a winner of this competition in 2012/13 when manager of St Etienne) knows that the next week is very important in the context of his team’s season. Consecutive wins over Monaco would set them up very well for 2020.

As one of France’s European representatives this will be Lille’s first game in the Coupe de la Ligue. It’s a competition they have not fared particularly well in considering they have been such a force in recent years. Their best performance came when reaching the final in 2015/16, losing 2-1 to PSG. If they can negotiate this difficult game then they may well fancy their chances of going all the way.

Key-Facts – Monaco vs Lille

  • After a dismal start to the season Monaco are moving up Ligue 1 and will have their sights set on a quarter-final place here
  • Lille are one of the form sides in France at the moment and will feel they are capable of going all the way in this competition
  • The teams meet again in Ligue 1 on Saturday and there could be a good psychological boost for whoever comes out on top her

Monaco vs Lille Betting Advice

There will be arguments as to what is the most important of this double header but neither team will want to lose and exit the cup at this stage. Monaco have already beaten one of the top three to reach this stage whilst Lille are coming into some very good form and looking to maintain that.

Both have recent experience of making it to the final of the Couple de la Ligue and both losing out to PSG at the final hurdle. Between Monaco and Lille, however, they have only won the competition once when Monaco were victorious in 2003. There’s no doubt they are two of the most capable winners this season.

Six points separate the two in Ligue 1 but both have very different approaches. Monaco’s games average three goals whilst Lille’s average goals per game is 2.17. Seven of Monaco’s last eight home games have seen both teams scoring and at least three goals in them. With five of Lille’s six away games also seeing both teams scoring that looks to be the standout bet here.
