Preview: The potential for fireworks in Monaco is abundantly clear. Can the latter go to the iconic Stade Louis and hit their hosts for four for a third term running?

Monaco Preview – Principality side can remain unbeaten at home?

Consistency hasn’t necessarily been Monaco’s strong point this season, which is understandable – in Niko Kovac they possess a bright coach who was always likely to require a degree of patience to impose his ideas and values on a side languishing in mid-table when the 2019/20 Ligue 1 term was curtailed in March. On that basis, to hold fifth place in the current standings has to represent early progression.

The team really did pick up the pace, though, immediately prior to the recent international break, putting a three-game barren spell to bed with impressive 4-1 and 1-2 victories over Bordeaux and Nice respectively. Monaco have now notched 17 goals in ten league outings, only Champions League aspirants Rennes and PSG plundering more, with the bulk of them (12) scored at home.

Unsurprisingly, Wissam Ben Yedder has again led the goalscoring charge, as was the case last term when, alongside Kylian Mbappe, he finished top of the Ligue 1 scoring chart on 18. The diminutive striker has six for the season, with four coming from his last three home appearances, helping to preserve Monaco’s unbeaten start to the season on home soil having won three of their five outings at Stade Louis II.

PSG Preview – Tuchel sweating over forward duo?

Following a slow start, owing to a shorter pre-season as several first-team members sat out their early fixtures, it has well and truly been a case of business as casual from a PSG perspective. To emphasise that point, they have registered eight consecutive Ligue 1 victories since defeats to Lens and Marseille, scoring 26 for the loss of a single goal – a consolation for Angers in their 6-1 Parc des Princes thrashing.

Away from Paris, Thomas Tuchel’s side have won four straight, doing so without ever really breaking a sweat against Nantes (0-3), Nice (0-3), Nimes (0-4) and Reims (0-2). The aggregate score from those fixtures: 12-0. Les Parisiens last shipping a goal on their travels in their opening fixture away to newly-promoted Lens. All this whilst nursing an increasing number of injuries to key personnel.

PSG may have went into the break in exceptional form therefore, but were no doubt anxious regarding the fitness of star forwards Neymar and Mbappe. Fortunately, neither player represented their country, heightening the prospects of a return to competitive action for the duo. The latter, in particular, has been in red hot form in 2020/21, contributing towards more goals (7 goals & 4 assists) than any Ligue 1 player.

Monaco Vs PSG Betting Advice

The bragging rights in this fixture have undoubtedly belonged to PSG, with the team from the capital claiming maximum points from five of the past seven Ligue 1 meetings (W5 D2) – having won ten and lost none of twelve meetings played out across a variety of competitions since Monaco were last victorious (3-1, August 2016). Moreover, PSG have scored four on each of their past two visits to Stade Louis, winning both.

Monaco Vs PSG – Key Facts:

  • In Ligue 1 this season, both sides are producing identical scoring averages (2.4 goals per game) across their respective home and away fixtures.
  • Monaco are still to lose a home Ligue 1 fixture in 2020/21, recording three wins and two draws, while PSG have won four successive away games since defeat at Lens.
  • In six Ligue 1 meetings spread across the past three seasons, the average for goals scored has been five, with each of the past five meetings featuring four or more.

Everything points towards a more competitive affair this time around. Monaco haven’t lost at home all season, where they are averaging 2.4 goals-per-game. Meanwhile, uncertainty over a number of key players in the PSG ranks, namely Neymar and Mbappe, dampens the visitors appeal. What we are able to ascertain, however, is there should be goals: the last five league meetings have all gone Over 3.5 Goals.
