Monaco Preview – Potent attack could trouble champions?

Following a turbulent start initially, Monaco (14th – W5 D3 L6, GF21 GA24) are on are the road to recovery and are looking up rather than down for a change. Back winning games again, the team have recently chalked up five wins from the last eight Ligue 1 fixtures, climbing out of the relegation places as reward and into the relative comfort of 14th. Still plenty of work to do then, but the club have rediscovered some of its lost verve and could soon be setting its sights on loftier ambitions.

The European places are now a mere six points from reach. Defeat in Bordeaux last weekend would halt them in their tracks, though, surrendering an early lead given to them through Islam Slimani before losing 2-1. That was a third defeat in four on the road, but at home Leonardo Jardim’s side have been a lot more accomplished, winning all of the last four against Brest (3-1), Nice (4-1), Rennes (3-2) and, the more recent of them, Dijon (1-0).

Beating Dijon was particularly significant, as it was accompanied by a first home clean sheet of the season. That would suggest registering another on Sunday is very unlikely, up against the best attack in the country, but few could discount Monaco from contributing as well. Les Monegasques are prolific at home, scoring more goals (16) in said matches than all sides in Ligue 1 barring PSG, with the partnership struck up between Ben Yeddar and Slimani proving deadly effective.

PSG Preview – Monaco a happy hunting ground?

Just days after somehow departing Madrid with a 2-2 draw, after fighting back from two goals down to score twice inside the final ten minutes against Real Madrid, the reigning Ligue 1 title holders are back in domestic action. Paris Saint-Germain (1st – W11 D0 L3, GF30 GA8) have been victorious in each of the past two seasons away to Monaco, cruising to a 4-0 scoreline there last term, and a similar result would consolidate their position at the top of the table.

Thomas Tuchel has steered this team to an eight point lead in Ligue 1, which seems insurmountable considering the gulf between them and everybody else. Three defeats already, though, is over half the amount managed throughout the entirety of the previous campaign, and nobody envisaged them losing to the likes of Dijon, Reims or Rennes. It is difficult to disagree with them being strong favourites in any league encounter this season, but there is certainly an element of risk about the champions this season.

PSG’s record in the league for thus far is still incredibly strong, however, winning eleven of fourteen and with a goal difference of +22. There have been some lapses defensively though, specifically in recent games away from Paris. Across their last three away matches in Ligue 1, four goals were conceded to teams arguably of inferior attacking ability than Sunday’s opponents. Real Madrid, meanwhile, exposed them time and again in midweek.

Monaco Vs PSG Key Facts:

  • Monaco are searching for their fifth straight Ligue 1 victory as hosts – they’ve scored in each of the last six at home.
  • PSG have won five of the previous six matches on the road in Ligue 1 (W5 L2 away from home this season).
  • The most recent two league meetings in Monaco were won by a visiting PSG, who racked up a four-goal margin of victory there last season.

Betting Summary

It wasn’t all that long ago that this specific fixture was ‘the’ fixture in France. The decline of Monaco in recent years has been sharp, leaving PSG uncontested atop Ligue 1.

Focusing on this match-up, this could be tricky for favourites PSG (1/2 Betway). Nobody can dispute them being favourites, on account of them possessing by far and away the best numbers in the league as well as the best squad. Yet two away defeats in Ligue 1 shows they are not invincible, even slumping to a 2-1 defeat in Dijon earlier this month. In-form Monaco (5/1 BetVictor), therefore, who are chasing a fifth straight home win, could pose a few problems especially with their dangerous forwards.

The defence of PSG has wobbled a little lately, going the last three away league matches without keeping a clean sheet. Monaco, meanwhile, have scored with consummate ease on home soil and could exploit any lapses in concentration or lack of respect. Goals in general seem a formality here and, sadly for us, that is accurately reflected in the odds. Les Parisiens are still the class act in this league, so backing them prevailing in what could be a high-scoring encounter is the selection.
