Monaco Preview – Can Kovac start with a win?

Monaco had another tough season in Ligue 1 last time around. The campaign was cut short, but Les Monegasques were beaten ten times. The club won ten and drew seven of their other 17 Ligue 1 matches to finish in ninth.

Monaco had a pretty productive pre-season under new boss Niko Kovac, though, beating Cercle Brugge and AZ Alkmaar, and drawing with German side Eintracht Frankfurt. Their only defeat came to Standard Liege in July.

Our betting prediction:
Both teams to score

Kovac has managed some big clubs over the years, including German giants Bayern Munich. The 48-year-old also had a two-year spell as Croatia boss. Can Kovac bring the feel-good factor back to this famous French club?

The Stade Louis II can be a tough place to visit, with Monaco picking up eight league victories on home turf last season. Can they start their 2020-21 campaign with a home win on Sunday?

Reims Preview – Will the Red and Whites pick up a positive result in Monaco?

Reims finished last season in fine fettle, losing just one of their last seven in Ligue 1. In fact, they have improved year after year in recent times, and last term’s six-place finish was a great achievement for the club from Grand Est.

The Red and Whites picked up the final UEFA Europa League spot, but can they go one better and book their place in the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League? Building on last season’s finish will be the first priority for David Guion, who has been at the club in some capacity since 2012.

Reims were a good away side last term, with just five teams picking up more points on the road than Guion’s men. Overall, they took 19 points on their travels, just three less than they mustered on home turf.

Reims are an astute outfit under Guion and are more than capable of leaving the Stade Louis II with maximum points this weekend.

Monaco vs Reims Betting Advice

These two teams went head-to-head on three occasions last term. Both Ligue 1 meetings ended in draws, while Monaco edged a French League Cup match on their own patch back in January.

Key Facts – Monaco vs Reims Betting Tip

  • Reims have beaten Monaco just once in league action since 2012
  • Both Ligue 1 fixtures ended in draws last season
  • Reims finished a point ahead of Monaco in the 2019-20 Ligue 1 campaign

Things have been tight between the pair in terms of recent games, with each of the last three and four of the previous five league meetings ending all square. Monaco were the last team to win by more than one goal in this fixture, picking up a 3-1 away win five years ago.

On paper, the two look evenly matched. With that in mind, I fancy the draw and both teams to score in this one, which is available at 7/2.
