Monchengladbach Preview – Ninth consecutive victory at Borussia-Park beckons?

For almost the entirety of the first half in Leipzig last Saturday, there was only one team that looked like winning. That team was Borussia Monchengladbach (4th – W12 D3 L5) who dominated proceedings up until the second half, when the balance of power shifted – even more so once they were reduced to ten men – and a back to the walls effort held out until the 89 minute. A 2-2 draw the final outcome, as The Foals finally dropped their first points from a winning position all season.

As if letting slip a couple of points wasn’t frustrating enough, Gladbach lost ground at the top of the table and now sit outside of the top-three for the first time since September. A run of one win from the last four (W1 D2 L1) hasn’t helped their cause, though, which is set to be further hampered by the absence of their most influential attacker this weekend. Forward Alessana Plea has contributed 8 goals and 5 assists in the Bundesliga this season, however the Frenchman will serve a suspension following last week’s red card.

Fortunately, their formidable record at Borussia-Park in 2019/20 should compensate for the loss of arguably the team’s star player. Coach Marco Rose has overseen eight victories from ten league matches staged on home soil this term (W8 D1 L1), recording eight straight successes since a 3-1 loss against RB Leipzig in August. This whilst scoring at a rate of 2.6 per game. Only one of their victories was accompanied by a clean sheet, though, with Gladbach & Both To Score proving very profitable thus far.

FC Koln Preview – Billy Goats revival skewed by results in Cologne?

It speaks volumes when the one side to have taken more points from the last six games in the Bundesliga than FC Koln (14th -W7 D2 L11) are the reigning champions and current league leaders, Bayern Munich. Even more impressive is how a team which were quietly fading into relegation abyss were the ones capable of producing such imperious form, with coach Markus Gisdol guiding this team to five wins in six having only masterminded two wins from the opening fourteen rounds prior.

There is, however, a disclaimer. Four of those triumphs were secured back in Cologne, where their form throughout the campaign is far stronger. A 4-2 victory away in Eintracht Frankfurt the one exception during this recent purple patch and only their second on the road all season (W2 D1 L7). On their latest away outing meanwhile, The Billy Goats were absolutely no match for Borussia Dortmund, losing 5-1 at Signal Iduna Park to slump to a seventh loss in ten away from home.

Just two teams have registered fewer points (7) or netted less goals (11) than Koln in away fixtures this season. So despite the recent positivity garnered from what has undoubtedly been an excellent period of results, these are among the worst travellers in the German top tier. Last week’s 4-0 romp at home to Freiburg will have boosted morale no doubt, while their 24 attempts on goal was the club’s second-highest figure in Bundesliga history according to Opta. Suggesting they are capable of troubling the scoresheet.

Betting Summary

FC Koln arrive the more confident of the two, after five wins in six, but their record when travelling is atrocious having lost 70% of the time in these encounters. Compare that to Monchengladbach, who are targeting a ninth consecutive home win, and it does make the odds about another victory for Marco Rose’s Gladbach side look mighty appealing.

Borussia Monchengladbach Vs FC Koln – Key Facts:

  • Eight consecutive Bundesliga wins as the home side for Borussia Monchengladbach, last dropping points at home in a 3-1 loss to RB Leipzig in August 2019.
  • Seven defeats out of ten in away matches this season for FC Koln, whose 26 goals conceded on the road is the worst in Germany’s top division.
  • Recent head-to-head suggests more home success for Gladbach – five of the most recent six encounters staged at Borussia-Park were won by the hosts.

Imperious at home for a long time now, Gladbach nevertheless don’t keep many clean sheets in these games and are often reliant on needing to out-score opponents. That may well be the case again. Koln grabbed a consolation at Dortmund recently whilst slamming four past Frankfurt in their two latest away encounters. Meanwhile, six of ten matches at Borussia-Park this season featured at least four goals. Monchengladbach & Over 3.5 Goals is 13/5 (PaddyPower).
