Monchengladbach Preview – Plum fixture can resurrect home form?

Only versus Werder Bremen (30) have Monchengladbach (W3 D3 L2) recorded more wins on home soil in the Bundesliga than they have against Schalke (29). That particular statistic partially explains how The Foals are such short odds coming into a fixture they actually dropped points in last term, despite bossing proceedings at Borussia-Park, with their xG that day of 1.49 more than double that of The Royal Blues.

Gladbach were subsequently defeated 2-0 when these sides clashed later on in the season, on Matchday 18 in Gelsenkirchen. Nobody has lost a Bundesliga game to Schalke since! Yet their record in this fixture is generally very good, recording five wins and three draws in the last eight competitive home meetings – though a 2-1 scoreline in September 2018 represents their sole win across the previous three campaigns.

More disconcerting has to be the record on their own patch so far in 2020/21. On Wednesday, a 4-0 victory here against Shakhtar Donetsk kept them top of their Champions League, having also been unfortunate to have only drawn 2-2 with Real Madrid. In the league, however, it is one win from four (W1 D3), edging RB Leipzig 1-0 but drawing 1-1 with each of Augsburg, Union Berlin and Wolfsburg.

Schalke Preview – Royal Blues closing in on unwanted record?

There doesn’t appear to be any immediate end in sight for Schalke (D3 L5). With a 2-0 loss at home to Wolfsburg in their most recent Bundesliga encounter, the club from Gelsenkirchen made it three points from eight games in 2020/21 (D3 L5) while extending their long barren streak in the league to 24 matches (D9 L15). Last getting their noses in front on Matchday 18 of last season, back in January.

Next up, however, is the side they last beat, Monchengladbach. That was on home turf though; they’ve not won away since November 2019, a winless run of fifteen for The Royal Blues who have slumped to three defeats in four said matches so far this season. Meanwhile, no team has conceded as many as them (24) at this stage of a campaign for 24 years, with 71% of this figure coming on the road.

Things are looking bleak, therefore, for Schalke head coach Manuel Baum, who has done little to improve the team’s ailing fortunes on the pitch since replacing the outgoing David Wagner in September. His record: W1 D3 L3, GF8 GA13. That rare win against fourth-tier FC Schweinfurt in the German cup. And for those keeping check, the longest winless streak in Bundesliga history stands at 31.

Monchengladbach vs Schalke Betting Advice

There will be plenty expecting a home side fresh from their drubbing of Ukraine champions Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League, crushing last seasons Europa League semi-finalists 4-0 here in midweek, to wipe the floor with their hapless visitors. However, Schalke, for all their woes this season, have been more competitive of late, earning back-to-back draws with Mainz and Stuttgart prior to last week’s 2-0 home reverse at the hands of unbeaten Wolfsburg.

Monchengladbach Vs Schalke – Key Facts:

  • After a draw (1-1 vs Augsburg) and loss (4-3 vs Leverkusen) in last two league games, Gladbach are on the verge of going three without a win for the first time under coach Marco Rose.
  • With no win in any of their eight Bundesliga matches this season D3 L5), Schalke have stretched their winless run in the league to 24 – seven shy of the all-time record (31).
  • Gladbach are unbeaten at home to Schalke in the last eight competitive meetings (W5 D3), but have won only once at Borussia-Park in the last three Bundesliga seasons.

Recent results have flattered Schalke, though, convincingly losing the xG battle in all three aforementioned matches. Gladbach, meanwhile, have often flattered to deceive at Borussia-Park this season, creating far and away the best chances in draws with Augsburg, Union Berlin and Wolfsburg without winning, but beating RB Leipzig with a paltry 0.26 xG. I fully expect the home side to make no mistake here however.
