Preview: German side Borussia Monchengladbach delivered a ruthless display last time out in the group, dispatching Shakhtar Donetsk with a shocking amount of ease as they racked up a huge 6-0 scoreline in Ukraine. It was the sort of outcomewhich inspires the notion that anything is possible when these sides reconvene in Germany at Borussia-Park.

Monchengladbach Preview – Attack the best form of defence?

It would have been easy for the German side to feel a little sorry for themselves after squandering leads late on in each of their previous two group games, drawing 2-2 with Inter Milan and Real Madrid. Instead, what we got was a team at their determined and ruthless best, securing their first win of this season’s group stage in emphatic style with a 6-0 dismantling of a previously unbeaten Shakhtar.

That stunning performance in Ukraine has shifted the balance in a tight section over to Gladbach (W1 D2), who hold a one point advantage atop Group B. All this whilst scoring at a phenomenal rate so far, netting 3.33 goals on average having found the back of the net a minimum of two times in all three encounters. We did, however, witness a first last time out; that being a rare clean sheet for goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

Since the start of the 2020/21 season, Marco Rose’s side have featured eleven times in the Bundesliga and Champions League and been unable to prevent the opposition from scoring on nine occasions. Fortunately this hasn’t cost them all that often, losing only twice with neither occurring at home (W4 D4), thanks in part to their powerful, dynamic attack which has scored two or more seven times this season.

Gladbach Win & Both To Score

Shakhtar Donetsk Preview – Free reign on their travels?

Early momentum garnered from their sensational performance and victory in Spain on Matchday 1, when surging into a 3-0 half-time lead in their 3-2 triumph against Real Madrid, has well and truly hit the buffers since. A fortuitous 0-0 draw at home Inter Milan followed, seemingly using up all their good fortune in that one outing, as Shakhtar (W1 D1 L1) were resoundingly beaten in record breaking fashion soon after.

The 6-0 Matchday 3 scroreline at the hands of Borussia Monchengladbach marked the club’s heaviest ever defeat in a home European fixture, undoing their previous good work which had helped them establish a lead in Group B. The final scoreline was a touch harsh but it was a second successive limp display in attack, generating a combined 0.44 xG in their last two group games. Both of which were played in Ukraine.

However, Shakhtar regularly exploited Real Madrid’s backline in their only away fixture of the group thus far, scoring three times in a deserved victory. They have now scored in all five away games in league and Europe so far this term, netting two or more in all but one, but could still only manage the two wins (D3). Expect goals therefore, and at both ends: both teams have scored in four of five away matches in 2020/21.

Borussia Monchengladbach Vs Shakhtar Donetsk Betting Advice

Having backed goals in the reverse fixture over in Ukraine, I was feeling rather smug when six went in. However, I never expected such a one-sided affair, and this has impacted the betting ahead of the renewal. Gladbach have excelled in Europe this season, particularly in attack (6 goals in 3 games), and now start as strong favourites in Germany where they are unbeaten in eight competitive fixtures (W4 D4) in 2020/21.

Borussia Monchengladbach Vs Shakhtar Donetsk – Key Facts:

  • There have been four or more goals in all three of Gladbach‘s Group B fixtures thus far, with the Germans netting at least twice in each encounter (W1 D2).
  • An average of 3.66 goals have been scored in Shakhtar‘s three group games (W1 D1 L1), this despite a goalless draw at home to Inter Milan on Matchday 2.
  • Gladbach have won only once at home in their previous nine home European matches (W1 D4 L4). Shakhtar are unbeaten in six away (W3 D3 when excluding games held on neutral territory).

It was a chastening evening last time out in the group for the Ukrainians, however, the 2019/20 Europa League semi-finalists are still more than capable of troubling their hosts, who have found clean sheets difficult to come by this term. Meanwhile Shakhtar have scored in all five away matches in league and Europe, which includes that memorable 3-2 victory in Spain against Real Madrid.
