It was the perfect start to qualification for England on Friday and they will be keen to build on that on Monday as they face Montenegro away from home, who got their own campaign started with a very credible 1-1 draw away to Bulgaria.

Montenegro Preview

This Euro campaign will be Montenegro’s sixth qualification for a major international tournament and although they’ve not really threatened to reach the finals, there is plenty of evidence to show how difficult an opponent they can be. That was proven once again as recently as Friday where they got this campaign off to a good start with that draw against Bulgaria. As fourth seeds in Group A, things obviously have to fall right for them to have a chance of finishing in one of the top two spots and the results on Friday certainly helped with that. England’s crushing defeat of the Czech Republic and Montenegro taking points off another rival for qualification means they can begin to dream just a bit more. That would, of course, increase further if they can get a result on Monday against the group favourites but it would not be a bad thing overall if England runaway with this group leaving second spot up for grabs. For Montenegro, the biggest thing they have to try and improve is picking up more wins with their current record reading as just two victories in 13 games. It’s a team that is definitely capable on their day but they’re also blighted by inconsistency which shouldn’t come as a huge surprise considering they are still an emerging nation.

Key-Facts – Montenegro v England

  • England have won eight of their last 10 away qualifiers and have kept nine clean sheets during that run

England Preview

The feelgood factor that Gareth Southgate and his England team created at last year’s World Cup has continued in both the Nations League and at the beginning of their attempt to reach the next major championships. A playoff place was secured for the Euros courtesy of finishing top of a UNL group that contained Spain and Croatia, highlighting further how confident, resilient and assured this team is under Southgate. It’s very unlikely that England will have to rely on that playoff fallback to reach Euro 2020 going by their commanding performance against the Czech’s on Friday, scoring five without reply. Raheem Sterling was the star of the show once again netting his first hat-trick for the national team and building on some impressive displays in the Nations League. Having been long criticised by the English support and media, there’s no doubting just how important and valuable the forward is for his country these days. There’ also no shortage of quality in the England squad and qualification should very much be within their grasp. The main aim is strengthening the team and their experience through this campaign and building towards what they hope will end with victory at next year’s championship – the final of which will be at Wembley.

England v Montenegro Betting Advice

Although very much favoured and fancied to make it two wins from two when facing Montenegro, England’s record away to this opponent suggests they need to treat this with plenty of respect and caution. This is the third time that these two countries have been drawn together in a qualifying group and England are yet to win away from home against Montenegro. Both matches have been drawn so far, 2-2 in 2011 and 1-1 two years later. This is a very different England team to either of those, of course, but the warning is there.

It’s one win in six home games for Montenegro, a record that hardly inspires confidence for the visit of an in-form England team who have threats all over the park – they’ve also not scored in four of those matches. The visitors have not lost a competitive away game since 2009 and their recent record in away qualifiers is eight wins in 10 matches. In those 10 games they have kept nine clean sheets and that leads me to a strong selection of England to win the game without conceding a goal.
