Montpellier Preview – Can Montpellier improve upon indifferent start?
Towards the end of last season’s campaign in Ligue 1, Montpellier seemed to be struggling to put consistent results together in the French top flight as the hosts captured just two wins from their final seven matches overall, which were home wins against Saint-Etienne and Strasbourg.
However, three defeats from their final four matches of the campaign prevented Montpellier from staking any sort of claim for one of the European spots as they slipped to losses against Monaco, Angers and Rennes – all of which were away from home.
A similar pattern seems to have begun in this new Ligue 1 season too as Montpellier lost 2-1 away from home at Rennes but bounced back with a 3-1 home win over Nice – however, they’ve tended to struggle against Tuesday’s opponents, Lyon, at home where the hosts have won just two of the last eight meetings at home against the visitors.
Lyon Preview – Can Lyon extend unbeaten start?
Lyon also suffered a dip in form towards the end of last season’s campaign as the visitors also recorded just two wins from the final seven matches of the term which came in the shape of a 2-0 win away from home at Metz and a 2-0 home win against Saint-Etienne, but defeats to Nice, PSG and Lille also scuppered any plans that Lyon might have had in terms of a possible top four finish.
The visitors also lost three of their last four matches on the road amidst an overall away record which finished up on 6-3-6 25/20 and although they lost 1-0 away at Montpellier in their last visit to the Stade de la Mosson, they’ve generally made life difficult for their hosts in previous exchanges.
Lyon’s previous performances at the Stade de la Mosson will give the visitors confidence that they can get something out of this trip, as well as the early goal-scoring form of forward Depay (3 goals), as they’ve beaten Dijon 4-1 and drawn with Bordeaux to date.
