Preview: A visit to Montpellier, and their fortress Stade de la Mosson, is seldom an exciting prospect these days for PSG, who are looking to secure only their second away win in this fixture across the previous five seasons – less than 72 hours after their hugely important victory in Europe on Wednesday.

Montpellier Preview – La Paillade searching for fifth-straight victory?
Avoid defeat in their mammoth tussle at home to PSG and Montpellier (W7 D2 L3) will make further inroads up Ligue 1. Currently residing in fifth place, a point on Saturday will see them climb into second, while a famous victory ensures they finish the day above the champions atop the table. No shortage of incentive, therefore, for Michael Der Zakarian and his players, who are in outstanding form to say the least.
Serbian forward Petar Skuletic’s first goal of the season, scored within moments of his introduction from the substitutes bench with less than a quarter of the game to go, proved a masterstroke by Der Zakarian last time out as Montpellier stretched their winning streak in Ligue to four matches with a 1-0 win away to Lorient. Three of those aforementioned victories were away from home and to nil.
Montpellier have tended to be susceptible on their travels, but this certainly hasn’t been the case so far this season. Stade de la Mosson, on the other hand, has always been a notoriously difficult venue for visiting sides. Since the start of 2019/20, La Paillade have lost only four times on their own patch (W14 D2 L4), with a 2-1 scoreline against Lyon in September one of four wins at home in 2020/21 (W4 L2).
PSG Preview – Tuchel with one eye on Istanbul Basaksehir?
While it isn’t quite mission accomplished in the Champions League for Thomas Tuchel and PSG, Wednesday’s 3-1 triumph at Old Trafford against Manchester United was a crucial step in them potentially booking a place in the knockout rounds. A point at the Parc des Princes this coming Tuesday, against bottom of the group Istanbul Basaksehir, and their arduous task of qualifying from a formidable section will be complete.
In the meantime there are important matters that need attending to domestically, namely protecting an unusually thin lead atop Ligue 1. Tuchel’s men hold a two-point cushion over a five-strong pack containing this weekend’s opponents Montpellier, against whom PSG have not had it all their own way in recent campaigns. Particularly on their travels, registering one win in the last four meetings at Stade de la Mosson.
PSG (W8 D1 L3) have also shown how fallible they can be this season, with their three defeats after twelve matches as many – or in some cases more – than in six of their previous eight Ligue 1 campaigns. There is also an argument they have grown complacent, perhaps anxious regarding the potential repercussions in Europe, as they have dropped five points from winning positions in their last two Ligue 1 fixtures (D1 L1).

Montpellier Vs PSG Betting Advice
There cannot be very many fixtures in France which cause trepidation among the PSG ranks, but a trip to Stade de la Mosson, where they have won just once in four previous visits (W1 D1 L2), has to be right up there though. Another bold showing from Montpellier, who are on a four-match winning run in Ligue 1 having won four of six home games thus far, seems inevitable.
Montpellier vs PSG – Key Facts:
- Since the start of 2019/20, Montpellier have won 14 and lost only four of their 20 Ligue 1 home games, with their record this season W4 L2.
- One point from the last six available for PSG, after relinquishing 2-0 and 2-1 leads away to Monaco (3-2) and at home to Bordeaux (2-2), respectively.
- PSG ended a run of three away Ligue 1 games away to Montpellier without a win last term (1-3). As such, the last two meetings at Stade de la Mosson have seen Over 3.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score.
I certainly couldn’t put anyone off the home side pulling off another upset; their form is outstanding, as is their record at home since the start of 2019/20 (W14 D2 L4 in Ligue 1). PSG also invested a great deal in England during the week. An alternative, however, is goals, specifically for both teams. That bet has landed in four of Montpellier’s six home fixtures this season, and in PSG’s last two Ligue 1 games (4 of last 6 in all comps).
