Preview: Ahead of Friday night’s kick-off at Stade de la Mosson, three points are all that separates Montpellier down in ninth from Rennes up in fifth and a place in European competition from next season. Plenty to play for then in Matchday 26’s early Ligue 1 offering.

Montpellier – La Paillade yet to truly get going in 2022?

In the absence of the club’s leading marksman, it was left to the ever influential Teji Savanier to come up with a moment of magic to settle last Sunday’s contest away to 18th-placed Lorient. The 30-year-old’s classy strike from outside of the box was his sixth Ligue 1 goal this season, with only Stephy Mavididi, currently sidelined with a knee injury, boasting more. Adding a touch of quality to an otherwise dour affair.

That win was enough to life La Paillade back into the Ligue 1 top half, now only three points behind fifth-place Rennes and an unlikely spot in Europe next term. On the evidence of their 2022 form so far, though, anything other than mid-table feels speculative. Olivier Dall’Oglio’s charges finished 2021 inspired with four straight wins, but have taken just six of a possible 18 points (W2 L4) since the turn of the year.

Key Stat: Just the four teams (Lille, Lyon, Marseille and Troyes) have won away from home versus Montpellier in Ligue 1 in 2021-22. All four defeats were by single-goal margins, three of which via 1-0 scorelines.

Rennes – Can Genesio’s charges avoid fourth straight away loss?

With Paris Saint-Germain well out in front, all that remains from a competitive viewpoint in France is the race for European qualification. Rennes are firmly in that mix. The recent 4-1 dismantling of relegation-threatened Troyes marked their third win on the spin at Roazhon Park, in turn strengthening their grip on fifth. They are five points back from third-place Nice and playing football in the Champions League next season.

Only leaders PSG have accrued more points from home games than Rennes, who are a force to be reckoned with at their residence in Brittany. On their travels, however, they remain among the most unreliable teams around with only four teams – all currently no higher than 16th – collecting fewer points away from home than Les Rouge et Noir. Losing each of the last four such matches, all by single-goal margins.

Key Stat: An away record of W3 D3 L6 ranks 14th in Ligue 1. Meanwhile, all three Rennes away victories this term were against lowly opposition, beating the sides currently 16th (Saint-Etienne), 18th (Lorient) and 19th (Metz).

Montpellier Vs Rennes Betting Advice

Rennes have already bested Montpellier once this season, racking up a scarcely believable 3.38 in a 2-0 victory last November. That made it four wins in five Ligue 1 head-to-heads having lost only one of the last eleven (W6 D4) going back to 2016. That sole reverse did come from their most recent visit to Stade de la Mosson, though, succumbing 2-0 at this ground in the opening round of last season.

Montpellier Vs Rennes – Key Facts:

  • A comfortable 2-0 victory for Rennes when the sides met first time around this season represented win number four across the pair’s previous five league meetings for Les Rouge Et Noir.
  • Montpellier would prevail in the side’s most recent duel at Stade de la Mosson, however, winning this fixture 2-1 last term courtesy of Stephy Mavididi’s double.
  • Both teams have scored in only two of the past eight Montpellier home league games and just two of Rennes’ last six away from home.

There has only been one draw between the sides at this venue across the past four campaigns, but four across the last eight. Perhaps I am merely looking for a reason to plump for the stalemate here. Neither are specialists in sharing the spoils either, doing so just four times apiece from 50 combined Ligue 1 games this term. And yet, Montpellier are much more reliable at home whereas Rennes are borderline hopeless away.
