CF Montreal – Goals flowing at the expense of positive results?

It truly was an evening to forget in Miami on Saturday. Facing Phil Neville’s hapless Inter Miami at DRV PNK Stadium, Montreal had in fact held the initiative going in at the break – the first time they had led at half-time in their past five matches – but paid the price for an error-strewn second-half performance. Having lost away to both New York City and New England beforehand, this is now officially a slump.

Particularly as this group were unbeaten in six going into said run of back-to-back away assignments. Fortunately for coach Wilfried Nancy, his team generally turn up in front of their own fans. The recent nine-goal epic against FC Cincinnati, in which Montreal twice fought back from a two goal deficit to clinch it 5-4 in dramatic style, marking their third straight victory here at Saputo Stadium.

Another new trend has been a glut of goals. That is now five games consecutively without a defensive shutout, after conceding in only one of four previously. Furthermore, there have been a minimum of three goals in four of their last five contests. So, could we be in for more of the same? Well, all but one of the past five MLS meetings with Atlanta United saw both sides contribute to the scoring.

Atlanta United – Change of manager but same old struggles?

The wait for a first MLS victory since May 15 continues to prove elusive for Atlanta United after they were beaten 3-2 by an Orlando City side which subsequently climbed up to second in the Eastern standings. As for the former, they slumped to successive defeats for the first time all season, which is fairly surprising for a side that is now eleven games since its last three point haul.

On the flip side, it was another encouraging display under interim boss Rob Valentino. Sure the performance itself wasn’t groundbreaking. In fact, in terms of quality of chances created, they were positively outplayed (xG: ORL 2.68 – 0.58) with their goals of the spectacular variety from Josef Martinez and Marcelino Moreno. But they are at least threatening more than they did under Gabriel Heinze.

Yet, after scoring the quality of goals that they did to hold leads of 1-0 and 2-1, to have come away empty handed is the latest blow to their already fragile confidence. It might also be argued that another road game is the last thing needed. The Five Stripes are among a handful of sides not to have won a single away fixture thus far (D5 L4), though have now held their own in two of the last three (D2 L1).

CF Montreal Vs Atlanta United Betting Advice

With Montreal coming off three consecutive losses and Atlanta losing their last two in an eleven game winless run that stretches back into the middle of May, opportunity knocks for both teams. On account of their respective home and away forms, though, it is Montreal who are justified favourites having collected 14 of 21 points on their own patch compared with just five of 27 outside of Atlanta for the Five Stripes.

Montreal Vs Atlanta United – Key Facts:

  • Since a 2-1 scoreline in their very first encounter, CF Montreal have gone six MLS matches (D1 L5) without a win over Atlanta United, who won the side’s sole meeting this season 1-0 in Atlanta, Georgia.
  • All but two of these head-to-head meetings produced both teams scoring, with four of these also seeing a minimum of three goals scored.
  • Both teams scored in the first half in two of the past three Atlanta United away games, and both of the last two home games for CF Montreal.

I think goals could be the best route into this contest. The last Montreal home game was one for the ages, returning nine goals. That was among four games in their last five to see both three or more goals as well as both teams scoring. That bet has delivered in two of the past three Atlanta United away matches, with the Five Stripes scoring and conceding in six of nine away games this season.
