Low-scoring affair expected between Morocco and Iran

MOROCCO v IRAN

Kickoff: 1600hrs

Football – World – World Cup 2018

Welcome to my World Cup 2018 betting tips, and absurd as it sounds, this next fixture could well represent a potential third place play-off in Group B as the unfancied ‘minnows’, Morocco and Iran, face off against each other at St Petersburg in a group that also consists of European heavyweights, Portugal and Spain.

Morocco come into these World Cup finals tagged as possibly the best team out of Africa, and this was certainly the case during qualification when they topped Group C, remaining unbeaten throughout the campaign and keeping clean sheets in all six of their group matches which is an extraordinary achievement in itself.

The Atlas Lions will have to call upon their defensive reserves once again when they face Portugal and Spain I fancy, but they’re expected to play without inhibition in this group opener, as this fixture represents their best chance of getting some points on the board. In addition, it’s a staggering 18 matches without defeat in all competitions as well for Morocco who possess some key flair attacking players such as forward Bouhaddouz and attacking midfielder, Ziyech who has a point to prove in his return to the national team.

Iran also come into these World Cup finals with a very solid defensive record as they conceded just two goals during their qualification campaign which saw them finish top of Group A, unbeaten and seven points clear of runners-up South Korea.

National coach, Carlos Queiroz, is a canny operator in the World Cups and this will be his fourth tournament, and second in charge of Iran who he’s taken to the finals in back-to-back campaigns.  Defensive discipline is Queiroz’s mantra, and he’ll also have to make do without the services of influential midfielder, Ezatolahi who is suspended.

Forwards, Taremi and Azmoun shone for Iran throughout the qualifiers, scoring 3 and 4 goals respectively, but Queiroz may opt to start with a 4-2-3-1 formation in a match which is a must not lose one against Morocco.

With both teams placing a heavy emphasis on defensive duties, and indeed, possessing very solid back fours, my betting tips analysis suggest this may well be a low-scoring encounter as a result.
