Motherwell Preview – Can ‘Well return to winning ways and continue impressive League Cup form?

Motherwell blitzed their way through their League Cup group section and fans were getting excited about what lay ahead. The Fir Park club won all four of their games scoring 13 goals in the process and conceding zero. It was a sparkling start to the campaign but it has been tempered somewhat in the past couple of weeks in their opening two league games. A rather subdued goalless draw away to Livingston was an acceptable enough result but it was far removed from how expansive and attacking their play had been against lower league opposition. The visit of champions Celtic was up next and despite scoring the first goal, Motherwell went down 5-2 at home. It was a sobering defeat and one they will be looking to bounce back from immediately.

Manager Stephen Robinson will be trying to take the positives from his team’s performances so far. On one hand they have shown they are capable of scoring goals and have threats all over the park. However, with one point from two league games – and conceding fie at home last week – it suggests there is a bit to go to find the consistency needed to finish in the top six. Putting that together and it’s easy to see why they are a dangerous team in cup competitions. Robinson has made no secret of his desire for an extended run in the League Cup and will relish tomorrow’s game – particularly playing at home.

Hearts Preview – Will Jambos register first win in four attempts to reach quarter finals?

There was pressure on Craig Levein before this season started due to a dismal league campaign in 2018/19. Hearts’ performances so far this term have done little to ease that pressure and they are already entering a critical stage of their season. Lose against Motherwell tomorrow night and the manager will only come in for even greater criticism. Unlike their opponents in the first knockout phase, the Tynecastle club’s group stage performance was much more of a grind. Hearts managed just two wins in regulation time from their four group matches. The two matches that went to penalties ended with one loss and one defeat. Despite their less than convincing performances, it was enough to see them top the group but only as one of the unseeded teams in the draw for this round.

Hearts come into tomorrow’s game on the back of two poor results in the league. A 3-2 defeat at Aberdeen on the opening day was followed by a very disappointing draw at home to newly promoted Ross County. Not only was it a bad result, the most concerning thing was they were extremely lucky to escape with a point.

Key-Facts – Motherwell v Hearts

  • Motherwell strolled their group in this competition – winning all four games and scoring 13 goals in the process
  • Hearts have not had a convincing start to the new season and Craig Levein is coming in for sustained pressure from the fans
  • These two clubs met at in the quarter finals of the League Cup last season – a game Hearts won 4-2 at Tynecastle

Motherwell v Hearts Betting Advice

Hearts are without doubt under more pressure coming into this game considering both club’s respective starts to the season. Levein’s style of football does not lend itself to building goodwill amongst the supporters so when it doesn’t produce results it’s not long before the fans turn against him. Motherwell, despite that heavy defeat at home to Celtic last week, play a much more entertaining brand of football and their supporters – in the main – are appreciative of this, accepting there will be some big losses along the way.

Home advantage is so important in these League Cup games and whoever is victorious knows they will be just a game away from playing at Hampden in a semi-final. Fir Park has not been a happy hunting ground for Hearts in recent times. They have won only three of their last 13 visits and are worth opposing this time around. Motherwell double chance is the selection for Friday’s game.
