Motherwell Preview – Are Dunfermilne set for a first win over opponents this season?

It had been a difficult start to 2022 for Motherwell. Six league games so far in the calendar year and ‘Well are still looking for their first win. Graham Alexander’s men have taken two points from a possible 18 but they still sit in the top six which would be seen as a success if they can stay there between now and the split. Alexander will be hoping that last weekend’s 2-1 win over Aberdeen here to progress in the Scottish Cup can act as a catalyst as they return to Premiership action.

It was Motherwell’s first win in 90 minutes since beating Livingston at Fir Park at the end of December and the performance was also a lot more encouraging. If they can do the double over the Dons then there is a possibility ‘Well would reclaim fourth spot at the end of the weekend.

Despite their recent struggles in the league their record at home in the Premiership is good. The 4-0 defeat at home to Celtic earlier this month is the only loss in six home league matches, winning four of them and also keeping four clean sheets.

Kevin van Veen scored the first of Motherwell’s two goals last weekend continuing his excellent record against Aberdeen. The Dutchman has played the Dons three times this season and has four goals to his name. He will be looking to add to that on Saturday.

Aberdeen Preview – Can Thistle boost their promotion hopes with an away win?

Defeat here seven days ago saw the end of Stephen Glass’ reign. It lasted less than a year and despite a big overhaul of the playing squad backed by significant investment, Glass was unable to find the style of play that many hoped he was able to bring. Results have been poor for a while so it wasn’t a huge surprise but does mean another reset for the Dons.

Barry Robson is taking temporary charge of first team affairs but it is looking increasingly likely that Jim Goodwin will be the new permanent manager, leaving his job at St Mirren.

Aberdeen sit eighth in the Premiership heading into this weekend and Tuesday’s draw at home to St Johnstone means they have now not won any of their last seven matches in all competitions. Their only win this year was against League Two side Edinburgh City in the Scottish Cup and like ‘Well, their last league win was on Boxing Day.

Despite all of that, a win here would put them level on points with their opponents and potentially in the top six. Aberdeen have loftier ambitions than that but it would be a start at rebuilding some positive feeling around the club.

Motherwell vs Aberdeen Betting Advice

Ordinarily, there would be no surprises between these teams considering this will be their fourth meeting this season and just seven days on the back of their last one. However, with the departure of Glass and Aberdeen now under the control of Barry Robson it does throw some uncertainty into the mix.

Motherwell have had the upper hand in each of the previous three meetings this season, winning each of them and conceding just the one goal in the process.

Key Facts –  Motherwell vs Aberdeen Betting Tip

  • Neither club have won a league game this year with their last victories on the 26th December
  • Stephen Glass was sacked as Aberdeen coach following a 2-1 loss to ‘Well in the Scottish Cup
  • Kevin van Veen has scored four goals in three appearances against Aberdeen this season

It has been a grind for both these teams in the league of late but ‘Well should take confidence from last weekend’s win and as there was no obvious sign of improvement for Aberdeen in midweek, take the hosts to get all three points.
