Motherwell have endured a terrible start to their domestic league campaign and will be hoping to avoid a major check when facing Glentoran from the North of Ireland.

Motherwell Preview – Can ‘Well put dismal league form behind them and progress to the next round of qualifying?

Stephen Robinson’s team were the surprise package of the Scottish Premiership last season, holding off a number of challengers (all with much bigger budgets) to finish in third place. It means they qualify to compete in European competition for the first time since 2014. They were subject to something of a shock that time around, losing to the Icelandic outfit Stjarnan. Robinson will obviously be hoping to avoid another upset this time around but his team’s form will not be giving him a lot of confidence.

‘Well have started this season very poorly and are without a win in their first five league games of the campaign.

Scoring goals has been a real issue with just two (both coming in the same game) scored to date. The derby defeat at home to Hamilton has been indicative of their season to sate in that they had a lot of play, the better chances but just couldn’t find that elusive goal and ultimately paid the price.

Robinson has been scathing of the attitude of his players in the last couple of weeks so it’s unknown what sort of team will line-up tomorrow. Star man David Turnbull is on the verge of moving to Celtic so it’s unlikely he will be available ahead of that transfer.

Glentoran Preview – Are Glentoran good enough to cause an upset and reach third round of qualifying for the first time?

It was dramatic circumstances by which Glentoran won the Irish Cup in order to qualify for the Europa League. Glens required penalties to win their semi-final before defeating Ballymena United in the final after extra-time. It’s a relief considering they would have been disappointed with a fifth place finish in the league. It also means this will be the first European campaign in five years for Glentoran.

The challenge now for manager Michael McDermott and his players is attempting to reach the third round of qualification for the first time in their history.

It’s been a really busy summer period for Glentoran who have brought in five new players and perhaps more importantly lost a number of their big names from the previous season. Those leaving include Connor Pepper and Navid Nasseri who both departed from Linfield. The duo were key players for Glens and remains to be seen if the required quality has come in to replace them.

The new look Glentoran got off to a winning start with a narrow 1-0 success at home to HB Torshavn of the Faroe Islands. This will undoubtedly be a big step up in terms of quality of the opposition.

Motherwell vs Glentoran Betting Advice

You don’t have to look too far back for Scottish teams being on the receiving end of a European shock with Kilmarnock the most recent of those when losing to Welsh league opposition last season. Motherwell have an awful record in qualifying to overcome as well with their last win in the competition coming back in 2010. Since then they have lost seven of their last eight qualifiers, drawing the other.

Glentoran are minnows compared to ‘Well but they have little to lose and will enjoy being the underdogs tomorrow.

Key Facts – Motherwell vs Glentoran Betting Tip

  • Motherwell finished third last season but have not won any of their first five matches of this campaign
  • Glentoran qualified via winning the Irish Cup and defeated HB Torshavn from the Faroe Islands in the previous round
  • This is the first time Motherwell are competing in European competition since 2014

It’s not priced up this way but I don’t expect too many goals in this game. Motherwell have struggled to score with just two goals in five matches and their most creative player unlikely to play. Glens managed just one of their own against HB so the under 2.5 goals may be value despite a significant gap in quality between the two teams.
