Motherwell – All is Well at Fir Park?

Sixth place last season in Scotland’s Professional Football League earned Motherwell a route into the Europa Conference League second qualifying round where, in theory, their path towards a first ever group stage appearance in European competition should be much easier. On Thursday, they host a continental fixture for the first time in more than two years, since a 5-1 win over Northern Ireland’s Glentoran in August 2020.

The Well’s home record in UEFA matches does, however, leave much to be desired. In fact, that aforementioned result against Glentoran stands as their sole victory on Scottish soil since 2010, having lost four (each ‘to nil’, three via a 2-0 scoreline) of six subsequent matches. Although nine wins across 19 SPFL fixtures at Fir Park in 2021-22 did rank highly, placing them fourth of 12 among their rivals.

Key Stat: Just two teams conceded more goals at home than the 28 in 19 games that Motherwell managed in last season’s Scottish Professional Football League. Moreover, the Well are without a clean sheet in six European home matches.

Sligo Rovers – Another big away showing needed?

The 2021 season in Ireland proved memorable for Sligo Rovers, who achieved their best finishing position for nine seasons. Their tally of 57 points from 36 games may have been a long way short of perennial League of Ireland champions Shamrock Rovers, but was good enough for third. Maintaining those stands has been a challenge though. They currently languish fifth after 22 games of the 2022 league season.

Results had picked up (W3 D2) prior to Sunday’s 2-0 loss at home to bottom-of-the-table UC Dublin. A knock to their confidence perhaps. A quick glance at their recent results in Europe, in particular those away from home, should raise their spirits though. The Bit O’Reds would win two of their last three European away games (vs Rosenborg and Bala Town) having previously failed to win any of their first 11 (D3 L7).

Key Stat: Sligo Rovers are set to partake in their 15th European away fixture. Their only clean sheets until now have been in goalless draws, against Ukraine’s Vorskla Poltava in 2011 and Lithuania’s Banga Gargzdai in 2014.

Motherwell Vs Sligo Rovers Betting Advice

Neither party will have been dissatisfied with the draw. However, with Scotland’s top division ranked ninth in UEFA’s Coefficients and Republic of Ireland’s League of Ireland all the way down in 40th (below the leagues of Luxembourg, Latvia and Kosovo), Motherwell should be the team moving on to the third qualifying round. Having said that, the Scottish side have won only once in their last six European home games.
