The League Cup has reached the knockout stage in Scotland and two teams looking to make the quarter-final are Premiership clubs Motherwell and St Johnstone.

Motherwell Preview – Can ‘Well make home advantage count in the cup as they often do?

Motherwell reached the final of this competition back in 2017 and will be hoping they can at least progress to the quarter-finals this time round having been drawn at home. Their record at Fir Park in the League Cup is very good having won seven of their last eight home games in this competition. The one exception to that was last season when losing 2-1 against Hearts.

Stephen Robinson’s men have had something of an indifferent home season so far with four defeats and just the two wins in the Premiership, although one of those victories was against this opponent back in September.

Due to their participation in Europe Motherwell did not participate in the group stage this time around meaning it’s their first game in over a year in this competition. Robinson has in the past targeted cup competitions and will look to field a strong team in order to negotiate this game.
Tony Watt will more than likely continue to lead the line as the striker continues to establish himself as a key player at Fir Park. A many of many clubs, Watt now looks settled with Motherwell and looking to make an impact against one of his former employers.

St Johnstone Preview – Are Saints able to continue their impressive run and progress to the next round?

With Tommy Wright moving on from St Johnstone after such a long spell in charge of the club there was always going to be some uncertainty as to how this season would go. As we approach the beginning of December, the new man in charge Callum Davidson can be encouraged with how things are going. The 2-2 draw away to Hibernian in midweek extends their unbeaten run to nine matches.

Davidson will be the first to admit that there are still areas for improvement, particularly in turning some draws into victories in their attempt to finish in the top six which would be a success in terms of their league campaign.

A cup run will also be high on the agenda for St Johnstone and although they would have preferred to be at home at this stage, they have won both away games in the League Cup so far. Albeit it they were against lower league opposition.

Key to St Johnstone’s form of late has been Stevie May. He scored their goal in last week’s draw with Motherwell which takes him on to nine goals in all competitions. Five of them have come in the League Cup so he’ll be their main threat tomorrow.

Motherwell vs St Johnstone Betting Advice

This will be the third meeting between the teams already this season and there has been little to choose between them in the first couple. A 1-0 win for Motherwell and that 1-1 draw last week suggests this will be another close match and perhaps even requiring penalties to determine the winner.

Key Facts – Motherwell vs St Johnstone Betting Tip

  • Motherwell have won seven of their last eight league cup ties at home, keeping clean sheet in all of those wins
  • St Johnstone are unbeaten in their last nine games in all competitions
  • The teams have met twice already this season with Motherwell winning at Fir Park and a share of the points earlier this month

St Johnstone have yet to beat Motherwell this season but are in very good form just now. With ‘Well also suffering from a number of players missing the home advantage is somewhat diluted. As such, and with these two teams so well known to each other, I’m happy to side with the draw on this occasion.
