Nantes Preview – Will Nantes complete their task to maintain their place in the French top-flight?

Nantes may have finished in 18th spot and therefore playing in the relegation playoff but they were able to gain an advantage in the first leg with a 2-1 win away to Toulouse. A 2-1 reverse against Montpellier on the final day of the regular season proved to be the difference in them having to contest this two-legged affair having won four in a row prior to that. So there has been form there and they’ve also shown resilience to respond from what was a really disappointing defeat just days before.

Randal Muani was the player who got the winning goal in the first leg and that continued his excellent form of late. Muani has now scored five in his last four games – netting in each of them.

This clash is an obviously special one for Nantes coach Antoine Kombouare who took over in February having last been in charge of Toulouse for a short spell between 2019 and 2020. There has been a noticeable improvement under Kombouare and he will be hoping they can get over this final hurdle and begin planning for next season.

A real concern for Nantes, however, is their form at home. They’ve won just one of their last 16 in Ligue 1 and although they don’t need a win in this match, they have lost four of their last six and six of their last 10

Toulouse Preview – Can Toulouse come back from first leg defeat and make an immediate return to Ligue 1?

Toulouse were relegated to Ligue 2 at the end of the 2019/20 season and they are looking to make an immediate return. Now under the coaching of Patrice Garande, the club finished third, just missing out on automatic promotion by two points. Like Nantes they have had little time to get over that and have had to prepare for these huge two games.

The first leg never went their way and they now have to go on the road and win if they are to return to top-flight football in France.

The playoffs is something that Toulouse have experience of, of course, having been the Ligue 1 team competing in them back in 2018. They defeated Ajaccio 4-0 on aggregate on that occasion but are going to have to work a lot harder if they are to win promotion via them this time around.

Toulouse have not been overly productive on their travels of late with two wins in their last 10.  That’s in contrast to their form earlier in the season when they won five in seven. English striker Rhys James Evitt-Healey is their biggest attacking threat having scored 15 goals in his first season at the club.

Nantes vs Toulouse Betting Advice

With what’s at stake this is going to be a game full of pressure and it will be who handles that best that prevails. Nantes undoubtedly have the edge following the first leg win but their home form does give some concern and last weekend’s loss when a win would have kept them up also provides some doubt.

Toulouse may feel they have nothing to lose but they to have to find improvement in their away form if they are to overcome their opponents.

Key Facts – Nantes vs Toulouse Betting Tip

  • Nantes hold a 2-1 lead from the first leg and are favourites to retain their place in Ligue 1
  • Toulouse have won just two of their last 10 away games in Ligue 2 so have to find improvement
  • The visitors are looking to make an immediate return to the top-flight have suffered relegation last season

I expect there will be goals as there was in the first leg. 13 of Nantes last 16 games have seen both teams scoring and with Toulouse needing to score it looks the perfect set-up to continue that trend.
