This is it then, the final of the US Open in the women’s draw and Serena Williams is not here.

Instead, for the title, it will be Naomi Osaka and Victoria Azarenka who will be battling it out on Saturday.

Forget rankings, these have been the top two players for the last three weeks of action, even before the start of the US Open.

This should be a cracker.

Naomi Osaka Preview – Osaka looks for Grand Slam number three

Naomi Osaka lifted the US Open title in 2018 against the odds and after adding the 2019 Australian Open on top, she is now looking for a third Slam title.

Osaka has now won her last ten matches in a row.

In the week before the US Open, Osaka had reached the final of the Western & Southern Open.

She had been due to meet Azarenka there, but Osaka had to pull out of the match with a hamstring problem.

After a drop in her form following her Australian Open title last year, Osaka now fully looks back to her best, having matured to a mentally stronger place.

With this match against the unseeded Azarenka, it means that if Osaka wins the title on the weekend, then she will not have met another top-ten seeded player.

Three of her six matches at the tournament so far have gone to three-sets, two of those happening in the opening three rounds.

But she had steadily gone up through the gears, starting with a good straight sets win over Anett Kontaveit in the fourth round.

In set betting for this one, an Osaka 2-0 is at 11/8* (odds taken 00:41 GMT, Saturday, 12th September)

Our betting prediction:
Azarenka 2-1

Osaka then beat Shelby Rogers in the quarters before knocking out another American in Jennifer Brady in the semi’s.

In that final four match up, Osaka dropped the second after having squeezed out the first in a tie break. So she did have a very stern test in that one.

Osaka does lead Victoria Azarenka in the head to head, a 2-1 advantage.

She is the favourite going into Saturday’s final and in the match outright she is priced up currently as the 4/7 odds-on favourite* (odds taken 00:41 GMT, Saturday, 12th September).

Victoria Azarenka Preview – Azarenka back on the big stage

Victoria Azarenka is ranked 27th in the world and in the Western & Southern Open on the weekend before the start of the US Open, she got the walkover title against Osaka.

That was the first title in four years from Azarenka and now she is on an eleven match winning streak in the final of a Grand Slam once more.

The Belarusian is a two-time Grand Slam champion. Prior to the start of the recent Western & Southern Open, she had won just one match in 12 months.

To be fair she didn’t play a lot because of personal issues, so this is a mighty comeback from her.

Azarenka has been to the final of the US Open, twice before in fact in 2012 and 2013.

She was on the losing end of things both times there and both were at the hands of Serena Williams.

But this year she turned the tables on the American great, as it was Williams who Azarenka knocked out in the semi finals.

Victoria Azarenka lost the first set of that match against Serena Williams 6-1 and her opponent looked unplayable.

But then Azarenka came out firing to defy the odds on a big comeback to get the win by taking the next two sets.

That was just one of two sets that she has dropped in this campaign.

She has faced some tough opposition as well, like Aryna Sablenka (5th seed) in the second round, 16th seed Elise Mertens in the quarter and then Williams in the semi finals.

So this has been no easy run for her and the Belarusian is running at a quote of 6/4 to get the match win on Saturday* (odds taken 00:41 GMT, Saturday, 12th September).

Naomi Osaka vs Victoria Azarenka Betting Advice

Notably perhaps the one win that Victoria Azarenka took over Naomi Osaka was from their one hard-court meeting at the 2016 Australian Open. That’s where Azarenka thrives.

The following two meetings have been on clay.

Azarenka looks really confident at the moment and her challenge is not to be lightly dismissed whatsoever.

The semi finals from both Azarenka and Osaka were spectacular matches and we think there is enough there to support 3 Sets happening in the final at 11/8* (odds taken 00:41 GMT, Saturday, 12th September).

Key Facts – Naomi Osaka vs Victoria Azarenka Betting Tip

  • Naomi Osaka leads the head to head 2-1
  • Naomi Osaka has won her last 10 matches in 2020
  • Victoria Azarenka in on an eleven match winning streak

Osaka looks a different character to the one that was struggling last year. She looks mentally in a very good place at the moment and extremely focused.

She is a tough player to face and has shown some real touches of class in the last few rounds as the challenges have gotten a little stiffer.

This is a really close call, but we would just have to side with Azarenka getting the win here.

In the second set of her semi final, she was playing with laser precision that Serena Williams couldn’t handle.

If Azarenka brings that to the table again, then there is a big chance for her in what is her first Grand Slam final in seven years.
