It was a surprise and extremely frustrating defeat for Napoli in midweek and they will be looking to make up for it at home to Brescia on Sunday, whom themselves are coming in off the back of a loss.
Napoli Preview – It was disappointment for Napoli at home, can they bounce back to keep pace with leaders?
It may only be five games into the new Serie A campaign but Napoli already find themselves six points behind leaders Inter. It’s far from an ideal position for Carlo Ancelotti and his players, with the coach himself stating that this was the season where his team had to go from good to great and begin winning major trophies again. Two defeats in their first five games is hardly the start which would inspire confidence in them being able to do that. Granted, one of those losses came away to champions Juventus in a game where they were very unfortunate not to take anything from. The defeat in midweek is a different story, though. The Naples club dropped 14 points at home last season and are already three points down following the loss to Cagliari.
The frustrating thing for Ancelotti is that his team once again dominated a game yet took nothing away from it. Knowing the importance of getting the win, Napoli were caught chasing the game and the visitors scored with what was their only shot of the game. Both Inter and Juve – the teams who are expected to be in contention for the title – were able to grind out results whilst not enjoying anything like the dominance Napoli had. It’s a trait this team don’t seem to have yet however it’s one they certainly have to develop if they wish to be successful.
Brescia Preview – Could Brescia replicate Cagliari and upset Napoli at home?
Juventus at home and Napoli away was always going to be an extreme test for Brescia in the same week. Having begun the season promisingly with two wins from four games, there was a feeling of anything from these two games would be seen as a bonus. Halfway through and Eugenio Corini will be satisfied with how his team performed against the champions. There will also be a slight disappointment that Brescia were unable to take anything at home having taken an early lead. Juve are so good at coming from behind so it should be no surprise by now. The loss goes alongside defeats to Milan Bologna – both of which were also by a single goal margin.
Tuesday’s game was also significant as it seen the debut of Mario Balotelli for his hometown club. Now back in Italy, the striker is keen to force his way back into the national team. He got his first 90 minutes of the season and will be keen to stay in the team. There’s no doubting his quality and if his attitude is right then Brescia have a great player on their hands. He adds some ingenuity to what is an industrious and well drilled outfit.
