Napoli head into this important first leg clash with Austrian outfit Salzburg on the back of a 2-1 defeat at home to Juventus in Serie A on the weekend but they have another chance to put thins right straight away on Thursday evening as they look to gain a lead in this two-legged affair.
Prior to the recent loss to Juventus, Napoli had put together an encouraging six-match sequence without defeat in all competitions as the hosts had registered wins against Sampdoria and Parma in Serie A as well as 3-1 and 2-0 victories over Swiss club Zurich in the previous round of 32 in the Europa League.
Despite their recent setback against Juventus, Napoli will be in confident mood in this competition as they’ve won their last three matches on the trot with a 2-0 win away at German club RB Leipzig as well as the aforementioned home and away wins against Zurich.
On home turf, Napoli have lost just once out of their last 15 matches which will also be a welcome boost for the hosts as they look to gain an edge here.

Salzburg recorded a 5-2 win on aggregate in the previous round of 32 against Belgian outfit Club Brugge, but the Swiss club had to come from behind to progress through to this round of 16 after they were handed a 2-1 defeat in the first leg in Brugge.
Salzburg bounced back in style though by inflicting a heavy 4-0 home win over Club Brugge in the second leg at their Red Bull Arena, and they’ll no doubt be hoping they can keep things tight in this opening leg against Napoli before returning home for the second leg in this clash.
Salzburg have won eight of their last nine matches overall in the Europa League while on their travels, their returns have been a little more modest with four wins from their last nine matches on their travels.
Within these away wins though were victories at Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig, so they’re certainly no mugs, but recent defeats at Lazio, Marseille and Club Brugge on the road might just hand the initiative to Napoli in this first leg.
