Preview: Before this latest round from Italy’s Serie A got underway, these teams occupied third and fifth respectively. However, with this fixture among two scheduled for Monday, we can expect all change when Napoli take on Roma seeking a third consecutive head-to-head victory at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Napoli – Scudetto challenge wobbling?

Despite scoring twice in last week’s home clash with Fiorentina, Luciano Spalletti was once again left ruing a poor defensive showing from his side as Napoli sustained the latest blow in their bid for the Scudetto. Dries Mertens had fired the Partenopei back on level terms early in the second half, however, the hosts never kicked in on and had conceded a further two times before Victor Osimhen rounded off the scoring.

That 3-2 defeat marked an eighth consecutive league game without a clean sheet, costing them far too many points (W4 D2 L2). And this from a side that begun the campaign with eight shutouts in their opening eleven fixtures. Expecting any improvement on Monday seems futile, though. Napoli boast a single win across their past four home matches, dropping points here to AC Milan, Inter and Fiorentina.

Key Stat: Seven of Napoli’s last eight Serie A matches have seen both teams find the net, while those keen to oppose the home side will be interested to know that all six Napoli defeats in the league this season were via single-goal margins.

Roma – Short turnaround for in-form Giallorossi?

It is another short turnaround for Jose Mourinho and his Roma side, following their serene progress through to the last-four of the Europa Conference League on Thursday. The Giallorossi were in no mood to mess around, firing in four unanswered goals as they exorcised their Bodo/Glimt demons in emphatic style. The fact this fixture is on a Monday rather than the usual Sunday should aid their recovery though.

Even with the heavier workload of the two teams, the momentum Roma take to Naples cannot be downplayed. Mourinho’s men are unbeaten in the league since January, winning seven of eleven games since a galling 4-3 home loss to Juventus – a game they led 3-1 until the 70th minute. A concern, though, will be their form away to the better teams: losing to AC Milan (3-1), Juventus (1-0) and Lazio (3-2).

Key Stat: Roma have scored one goal exactly in three consecutive Serie A games (vs Sampdoria, Spezia, Udinese). Across the 2021-22 season so far, the Giallorossi would find the net in 13 of 15 away league games, only failing to do so in 1-0 losses away to Bologna and Juventus.

Napoli Vs Roma Betting Advice

The sight of another of Italy’s elite is enough to give Napoli fans palpitations. That said, this has been a favourable fixture for the Partenopei in recent times. Prior to the goalless stalemate that took place in Rome earlier this season, Napoli had beaten Roma three times running (2-1, 3-0 and 2-0) including the last two times here in Naples. It is also worth noting Roma were in European action as recently as Thursday.

Napoli Vs Roma – Key Facts:

  • Recent meetings have invariably gone Napoli’s winning, the Partenopei prevailing three of the last four times (D1) which includes the last two times in Naples (2-1 & 4-0).
  • Napoli have scored and conceded in seven of the last eight league games. Four of their past five Serie A home games concluded with both teams having scored.
  • Roma are usually reliable for a goal away from home, netting in 13 of 15 said fixtures in 2021-22 thus far. Five of their past seven Serie A away matches produced both teams scoring.

Although Napoli would be my preference if I had to choose a winner, their performances when hosting better teams this season is enough to deter me. However, Roma have already lost away to AC Milan, Juventus and Lazio and still have trips to Inter and Fiorentina to come. Goals look the safest route then. BTTS has landed in seven of Napoli’s past eight matches while Roma only blanked in two of 15 on the road.
