A rare league defeat for Gennaro Gattuso and his team on Thursday night, but an incredibly damaging one all the same. After scraping a narrow win at the Stadio Olimpico against a struggling Sampdoria embroiled in the Serie A relegation battle, the Giallorossi have since suffered back-to-back 2-0 defeats at the hands of AC Milan and Udinese to drop right out of top-four contention. Now they have a fight on their hands ensuring they don’t miss out on qualifying for next season’s Europa League.
The top six sides are all guaranteed a place in Europe next season, with those in fifth and sixth dropping into the Europa League. They’ve kept just a single clean sheet in this run, conceding on average 1.91 goals per game, while their only wins have come against teams currently residing in 9th, 16th, 17th and 18th. So these are undoubtedly worrying times, for a team now under even greater pressure as those beneath them close in.
