Napoli Preview – Partenopei out to prove midweek loss was a minor setback?

A rare league defeat for Gennaro Gattuso and his team on Thursday night, but an incredibly damaging one all the same. It meant Atalanta strengthened its grip on the fourth and final Champions League spot following their 2-0 victory in Bergamo, as two second-half goals accounted for a Napoli (6th – W13 D6 L10) side that had been in outstanding form beforehand but, crucially, now trail the top-four by 15 points.

It is another quick turnaround, though, with less than 72 hours between their midweek defeat and Sunday’s Naples encounter with a Roma outfit only three points and one position better off in the Serie A table. Victory for I Partenopei would see the sides move level on points, in what is now a four-horse race (the other teams being AC Milan and Hellas Verona) to secure a top-six finish and qualify for next season’s Europa League.

Despite the midweek reverse, Gennaro Gattuso deserves a tremendous amount of credit for transforming the fortunes of a beleaguered outfit who, at one stage, appeared destined to finish in mid-table. Napoli have won seven of their last nine fixtures in Serie A, losing only twice in that time, while in Naples it is three wins from the last four having beaten the likes of SPAL (3-1), Torino (2-1) and even leaders Juventus (2-1).

Roma Preview – Advantage in fifth suddenly precarious after dip in form?

A disastrous restart for Roma (5th – W14 D6 L8). After scraping a narrow win at the Stadio Olimpico against a struggling Sampdoria embroiled in the Serie A relegation battle, the Giallorossi have since suffered back-to-back 2-0 defeats at the hands of AC Milan and Udinese to drop right out of top-four contention. Now they have a fight on their hands ensuring they don’t miss out on qualifying for next season’s Europa League.

The top six sides are all guaranteed a place in Europe next season, with those in fifth and sixth dropping into the Europa League. Roma are currently in pole position, however, their advantage is certainly precarious, with AC Milan in seventh now only five points further back and no doubt galvanized by what they’ve seen recently from Paulo Fonseca’s inconsistent charges.

The Roma boss has now overseen seven defeats in his last twelve Serie A games (W4 D1 L7) at the helm since the turn of the year. They’ve kept just a single clean sheet in this run, conceding on average 1.91 goals per game, while their only wins have come against teams currently residing in 9th, 16th, 17th and 18th. So these are undoubtedly worrying times, for a team now under even greater pressure as those beneath them close in.

Napoli Vs AS Roma Betting Advice

An important match-up in the context of Europa League qualification, as sixth host fifth in a contest which pits a resurgent Napoli, which has won seven of its last nine games in Serie A, against a declining Roma who come into this game on the back of seven losses in its past twelve league encounters. Odds of around even about a Napoli victory seem about right.

Napoli Vs Roma – Key Facts

  • The Naples outfit arrive in the superior form, with Napoli boasting seven wins from their previous nine matches in Serie A (W7 L2) having won three of the last four staged at home.
  • Successive 2-0 defeats now for Roma, who have now recorded seven losses across their previous twelve games in Serie A (W4 D1 L7).
  • Just one of the past six Serie A meetings failed to produce a goal for both teams, with each of the last four – including this season’s clash in Rome, which ended 2-1 to Roma – complying.

Instead, we focus on the goal markets, and for good reason. Napoli have kept just two clean sheets in their previous seventeen Serie A games, while six of the last seven held in Naples produced both teams scoring. As for Roma, all but one of their last twelve league opposition scored past them, while five of their last six away matches featured both teams among the goals.
