Preview: A depleted Atlanta United head to Nissan Stadium, a ground which has been akin to a fortress for Nashville SC this season with no visiting team thus far emerging victorious. Will the former, who do boast a tidy record in this fixture, break the mould and become the first to snap the latter’s impressive unbeaten home record?

Nashville – Home form behind rise up Eastern Conference?

The fourth consecutive home game in a five-game stretch for Nashville sees them looking to preserve an eight-game unbeaten record at their Nissan Stadium, where a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Philadelphia Union last time out helped Gary Smith’s side climb up to fourth in the Eastern Conference standings. Next up, a fixture they put up three first-half goals in a 4-2 triumph last season.

Nashville have only beaten Atlanta United the once in four meetings, which was that aforementioned four-goal display. They may never have a better opportunity to double up, though, with their opponents currently on a six-game wait for a win having not won away from home all season. This compares unfavourably to Nashville who will be seeking out a fifth win on home turf in the last six (W4 D1).

However, this team rarely does anything twice – in succession, that is. Their previous eight MLS matches goes as follows: WDWDLWDW. They’ve not strung together back to back victories so far this season. Nor were they particularly impressive last time yet still ground out three points, as well as a fifth clean sheet of the campaign – four of which have come here in Nashville, where they have won ‘to nil’ on three occasions.

Atlanta United – Absentees hindering any recovery mission?

When it rains it pours. That is certainly applicable when describing the current woes of this Atlanta United side, who are set to be without a whole host of key players for their clash with in-form hosts in the shape of Nashville SC. Veteran goalkeeper Brad Guzan is among a clutch of first-teamers to have already signed off for international duty, leaving head coach Gabriel Heinze with limited options at Nissan Stadium.

Heinze was already light on personnel for his side’s trip to Chicago to face The Fire last time. The end result a humbling 3-0 loss, to a side no less which had won one game in ten and scored a paltry seven times prior to then. The wheels are therefore coming off for The Five Stripes, who will be further short-handed for their visit of Nashville – an opponent they do at least retain a positive record against (W2 D1 L1).

In fact, Atlanta have scored exactly two goals in all four encounters with Nashville. Yet a repeat seems fanciful on this season’s evidence. For starters, Atlanta haven’t scored more than once in seven of their last nine. That includes none whatsoever across the last three (vs New York City, New York RB and Chicago Fire). But to top it off, they have only mustered three goals in six on the road (D3 L3) all season long.

Nashville Vs Atlanta United Betting Advice

A record of one win from four against Atlanta United suggests Nashville have their work cut out recording what would be their first set of consecutive wins all season. However, this is before taking several other critical factors into account. Like how Atlanta, who are alarmingly depleted for this fixture, are enduring a rotten period (no win in six) and have not won on their travels in MLS in 2021 (D3 L3).

Nashville Vs Atlanta United – Key Facts:

  • This will mark the fifth meeting between the clubs. Atlanta (W2 D1 L1) boast a peculiar record of having netted exactly twice in all four previous encounters with Nashville.
  • Nashville won the last of those held here at Nissan Stadium though, and are in tremendous form at home this season with a record of W4 D4 (W4 D1 in last five).
  • Atlanta United are toiling right now. Gabriel Heinze’s men are winless in six (D2 L4) and without an away win all season (D3 L3), scoring just three times on the road.

Bookmakers have cottoned on to Atlanta’s travails though, and have them priced accordingly as 9/2 underdogs. Nashville appear short enough at a best-price 8/13 but look sound investment all things considered. Gary Smith’s men are unbeaten at home, winning four of the last five. Three of those wins were to nil meanwhile, and with Atlanta without a goal in their past three games, a similar outcome cannot be ruled out.
