World number 6 Nathan Aspinall makes his entry in this year’s PDC World Championship as he faces Scott Waites in the second round.

Aspinall has been one of the form players of 2020 and he will be expected to go deep in the tournament.

The winner of this match will go forward to meet 27th seed Vincent van der Voort in the third round.

Nathan Aspinall Preview – The Asp expected to progress

Given that Nathan Aspinall is the 3/10 odds-on favourite for the win in this match it would be a sizeable upset if he fell at the first hurdle * (odds taken 18:52 GMT Tuesday, 22nd December).

This is a second-round match at the PDC Darts World Championship and 6th seed Aspinall is one of the leading contenders.

“The Asp” has played the World Championships twice only before and he had reached the semi-finals on both occasions.

It’s a phenomenal record and this season he has returned some other big results.

Aspinall reached the final of the Premier League Darts on his debut and also the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam of Darts and the World Series Of Darts Finals.

The most recent action that he had was in the Players Championship Finals where he was beaten in the second round.

But in the first round of that event, he had taken a win over Scott Waites but only by the narrowest of margins.

However, the World Championships is his stage and a 3-1 Aspinall correct option is at 12/5* (odds taken 18:52 GMT Tuesday, 22nd December).

Our betting prediction:
Aspinall 3-1 correct score
13/5

That recent meeting between Aspinall and Waites was the first meeting that the two players have had.

Given the form that The Asp has produced on the biggest stage of all, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him sort of cruise through the match.

He has won 10 of his last 15 matches across all tournaments this should be comfortable enough.

Scott Waites Preview – Waist with a tough hill to climb

Scott Waites opened in the first round of the PDC Darts World Championship against Matt Campbell.

Waites beat the Canadian 3-2 in a bit of a grind because his opponent was right there in the mid-nineties for a three-dart average.

So Waites was under pressure there. He is a 5/2 underdog for this match on Wednesday in the second round* (odds taken 18:52 GMT Tuesday, 22nd December).

This is the debut in the PDC World Championships for him after making the switch from the BDO this year.

He was one of the top players in the BDO winning their version of the World Championships twice in 2013 and in 2016.

Waites reached at least the quarterfinals in each of the last five BDO World Championships that he entered.

But the PDC is a whole different kettle of fish as he has found out.

The only two appearances in the main draw of a big PDC tournament this year for Waites were in the UK Championships and the Players Championship finals.

The latter of those, his most recent top-level action, saw Waites crash in the first round to Aspinall.

Scott Waites has lost three of his last five matches across all competitions now and despite his vast experience won the BDO, he doesn’t look like a big threat.

For a darts betting option there is a Waites +1.5 handicap at 11/10* (odds taken 18:52 GMT Tuesday, 22nd December).

If he had been a little more convincing in getting past Campbell in the first round, we may have been talking a little differently.

But he didn’t and we see him getting brushed aside by one of the best in the business at the moment.

Nathan Aspinall vs Scott Waites Betting Advice

Nathan Aspinall should win this match as he’s one of the big players in this draw and rarely looks rattled.

He should handle the pressure and a 3-1 correct score in his favour is a good starting point at 12/5* (odds taken 18:52 GMT Tuesday, 22nd December).

We think that it will be that easy for him on the night.

Not us. Not on the World Championship stage.
