Preview: We’re down to the final eight in 2021’s European U21 Championship. The Netherlands boast the most goals in these finals but are taking on a resolute French outfit, breached on only one occasion en route to yet another knockout appearance.

Netherlands – Young Oranje take a while to get going?

The Dutch didn’t even qualify for five of the past six tournaments but are now three wins away from potentially being crowned European Under 21 champions for a third time, last lifting the trophy in 2007 a year on from claiming their first title at this level. Erwin van de Looi’s Young Oranjes were the most prolific side during the group stage, netting eight times, but certainly didn’t have things all their own way.

Successive 1-1 draws with Germany and Romania meant a win was needed from their final group match with co-hosts Hungary. Six goals, sourced from five different scorers, securing a 6-1 victory and with it top spot in Group A. The only player to net more than once in that resounding win, Cody Gakpo, has since been called up to the senior side, while seven of eight tournament goals came after the half-time interval.

France – Les Bleuets bolstered by Bundesliga additions?

After missing out on six consecutive finals between 2007 and 2017, Les Bleuets are bidding to reach successive semi-finals following their 4-1 loss to Spain two years earlier. Once there, though, their record for making the latter stages is impeccable, qualifying for the knockout stages on all ten tournament appearances. A record they fought tooth and nail to preserve this time around.

An opening loss to Denmark, going down 1-0 to a goal conceded 15 minutes from time, left France on the brink of an unthinkable early demise before successive 2-0 victories against Iceland and Russia sealed their customary place in the knockouts. Their claims of reaching a first final since 2002 are bolstered considerably, meanwhile, by the squad additions of experienced Bundesliga pair Dayot Upamecano and Moussa Diaby.

Netherlands Vs France Betting Advice

Despite winning a game fewer than their quarter-final opponents, the Netherlands (W1 D2) racked up more goals than any other side during the group phase of the tournament. All but one was scored in the second half, though they did open the scoring each time. Whether they can do the same against France (W2 L1) is another matter. Les Bleuets shipped one goal en route to their tenth appearance in the knockout rounds.

Netherlands U21 Vs France U21 – Key Facts:

  • The Netherlands (W1 D2) qualified as Group A winners, despite registering fewer wins across the group stage than France (W2 L1), who finished as runners-up from Group C.
  • These teams have been at their most productive at these finals in different halves. The Netherlands netting seven of eight goals in the first-half while France scored all four of theirs before the break.
  • None of the matches at these finals involving France featured both teams scoring, however all three of the Netherlands saw both teams oblige in front of goal.

All four French goals in these finals have come inside the opening period. Whereas all but one of the eight plundered by the Dutch were scored after the break. France/Draw (14/1 Boylesports) in the HT/FT market has some logic to it then. However, I am inclined to lend my backing to a Les Bleuets side who will be stronger for the arrivals of RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen starlets Dayot Upamecano and Moussa Diaby.
