This is the furthest the Dutch have ever reached in the World Cup and they’ll be looking to progress to Sunday’s final as they face a Sweden team who were beaten finalists in 2003.

Netherlands Preview – Can the Dutch make it to their first World Cup final?

There was no doubting the quality that was contained in the Netherlands squad heading into this competition. The current European champions have been on an upward trajectory for a number of years but this was always going to be the acid test. It’s been a case of so far so good for the Dutch who will contest their first ever World Cup semi-final on Wednesday. Their passage to this stage has been through a combination of skill and the ability to grind results out. They breezed through the group stage winning all three games against New Zealand, Cameroon and Canada. All three of those opponents are stubborn and awkward to face so would have presented different challenges. It set them up well for the knockout phase and another two testing games.

A last-16 game against 2011 winners Japan was about as hard a game as they could have gotten at that stage. A double – including a last-minute penalty – from the impressive Lieke Martens was enough to progress and set-up a quarter final with Italy. That game was not nearly as dramatic but the Netherlands did have to wait until the last 20 minutes to open the scoring. They are certainly battle-hardened heading into Wednesday’s game.

Sweden Preview– Will Sweden continue to beating higher-ranked teams?

Sweden have traditionally been one of the strongest nations in women’s football so it should not come as any real surprise to see them competing in the latter stages of another World Cup. The runner’s up spot 16 years ago coupled with two third place finishes is tremendous consistency for a nation their size and they have been excellent here once again. As tends to be the case with Swedish football teams, they are built on efficiency and organisation. The 5-1 win over Thailand in the group stage is the only time they have managed more than two goals in this competition so far. The Swedes have suffered defeat as well having lost 2- to USA to concede top spot in their section to that opponent. As a result they too have been severely tested in the knockout phase.

A nervy and hard-fought 1-0 win over Canada in the last-16 was followed by an excellent 2-1 success against Germany in the previous round. Sweden altered their game plan slightly for the game against the Germans and were more direct in their attack. It shows how adaptable they can be and they will have to be at their very best to cope with the talented Dutch attack.

Key-Facts – Netherlands v Sweden

  • This is the first time the Dutch have made it as far in a World Cup and could yet make more history with a win
  • These teams last met in the 2017 European Championships when the Netherlands defeated Sweden on the way to winning the competition
  • It’s a clash of two very different styles which will make for an intriguing game – three of the Dutch’s five games have seen both teams finding the net

Netherlands v Sweden Betting Advice

This all-European semi-final is a fascinating clash of styles. The Dutch are a team built on offence and individual brilliance in attack. Perhaps the biggest surprise from them this tournament has been how well they have coped defensively. Sweden, on the other hand, are more pragmatic in their approach but it’s equally effective. The defeat to USA in the group stage could easily have had a lasting impact but they have recovered well and the knockout format certainly suits their style.

This is the first meeting of these teams since the 2017 European Championships. The Netherlands proved too strong on that occasion, winning 2-0 en route to the final and winning their first major trophy. Home advantage was a major factor in that game, however, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out two years later on a neutral venue.

Netherlands and Sweden are ranked eighth and ninth respectively so it’s already been a tremendous achievement for both to get to this stage. It’s also another indication of how closely match they are and that should ensure a very evenly contested game. The bet I like here is both teams to score. It’s been a winner in three of Netherlands’ five games at the World Cup and Sweden have also conceded in three out their five matches.
