The Netherlands will be confirmed as winners of the group with at least a draw. However, Norway know anything less than victory leaves their participation in serious doubt.

Netherlands – Oranje to qualify at second time of asking?

Memphis Depay strengthened his lead atop the goalscorer standings with a brace of goals – the fifth time the former Lyon and current Barcelona attacker has netted at least twice in this qualifying campaign – in Saturday’s 2-2 draw away to Montenegro. The shine of that feat, however, was tarnished by the result. The Netherlands squandering a two-goal lead when on course to qualify with a game to spare.

So instead of being afforded the luxury of rotating his pack, Oranje head coach Louis Van Gaal is having to name a strong side to ensure no further slip ups – particularly as defeat here could see them finish down in third and miss out altogether. The Netherlands are a perfect four from four in home qualifiers though, scoring 18 for the loss of a single goal, and have lost one of their past 14 internationals (W10 D4).

Key Stat: The Netherlands have scored 31 times in 9 qualifiers, second only to the 32 of Germany in UEFA World Cup qualifying. Louis Van Gaal’s men have netted two goals or more on seven occasions.

Norway – Haaland void derailing qualifying aspirations?

Saturday’s uninspiring goalless draw with Latvia could yet prove costly, but as of now Norway are still in contention for a top two finish in Group G. In fact, victory in Rotterdam against the current leaders, the Netherlands, would see the Scandinavian nation qualify for their first World Cup since France 98′. And as group winners no less, provided Turkey do not collect maximum points in Montenegro.

For that to materialise, a huge improvement in performance levels is required on the weekend’s flat showing in Oslo. As dominant as The Lions were, they were hopeless with the ball, landing five of their 25 goal attempts on target. With Erling Haaland still out, someone will have to step up on Tuesday. The defence is certainly capable of playing their part, though, conceding once in four away qualifiers so far (W3 D1).

Key Stat: While the recent outcome versus Latvia (0-0) was disappointing, it did extend their unbeaten streak in competitive matches to seven (W4 D3), a run which has seen them concede just three times and never more than once.

Netherlands Vs Norway Betting Advice

With so much on the line for both parties, we can probably expect a tense affair in Rotterdam. The Netherlands know a point will suffice whereas, in all likelihood, only three will do for Norway. This should make for an interesting dynamic. The Dutch are the second-highest goalscorers in qualifying but don’t need to win. However, Norway boast the meanest defence in the group but require goals of their own.

Netherlands Vs Norway – Key Facts:

  • Ahead of kick-off in Rotterdam, the Netherlands top Group G, two points clear and boasting a considerably better goal difference than both Norway and Turkey.
  • The Netherlands are unbeaten across all four head-to-head encounters this century (W3 D1), with each of these games seeing no more than two goals and only six in total.
  • Both teams boast strong defensive records in home and away qualifying matches respectively; the pair recording a clean sheet in three of four said fixtures.

Norway are unbeaten in seven competitive matches and have only conceded the three goals across this period. So for all the attacking prowess of this Netherlands side, there is every chance the visitors’ strong defensive resolve, as well as the occasion, takes precedent. History also lends itself to a tight, low-scoring encounter with just six goals being scored in four meetings (all Under 2.5 Goals) since the turn of the century.
