The preparations for this month’s European Championships step up a notch with the Netherlands and Scotland playing in their penultimate warm-up games before their campaigns begin.

Netherlands Preview – Will the Dutch show their class ahead of their first group match against the Ukraine?

Frank de Boer was appointed as boss of the Dutch national team back in September last year following Ronald Koeman’s departure to take over at Barcelona and after the group of players had reached Euro 2020. The postponement of the original date has therefore played in his favour as the former Dutch captain gets a chance to lead his nation as head coach.

This summer’s European Championships will be the first time the Netherlands have appeared at the finals since 2012 when they lost all three group matches and exited the finals with a whimper. They will have to put on a far better showing this time around otherwise there could be another change.

The Dutch will face the Ukraine, Austria and North Macedonia in their section and it goes without saying they are favourites to top the group and do so quite comfortably, particularly as all of their games will be played in Amsterdam. They begin their campaign on the 13th of June.

It’s been a mixed bag since De Boer took over as the Dutch finished second in their Nations League group behind Italy before losing their opening World Cup qualifier away to Turkey. Their most recent two games have been wins against Latvia and Gibraltar.

Scotland Preview – Can Clarke’s men build on their positive feeling as they approach their first Euros since 1996?

It’s two years since Steve Clarke took over a Scotland boss and whilst there have been frustrations and challenges throughout that time, he has achieved his number one objective which was to get Scotland to a major championships. Scotland qualified via the Nations League playoffs and will now participate in their first major finals since 1998 and their first appearance at the Euros in 25 years.

That is a significant and exciting achievement for Clarke and his players and they will now look to make an impact in a group that contains the Czech Republic, Croatia and their auld enemy, England.

Like the Dutch, Scotland will have home advantage to fall back on in the group stage with the matches against Croatia and the Czechs to be played at Hampden with a quarter of the capacity. That will spur the players on whilst they travel to Wembley to play Gareth Southgate’s men.

Scotland will play Luxembourg on Sunday which will be their last match before the finals start. One man who won’t be playing in either is John Fleck who tested positive for for Covid and will have to isolate. All going well he should be able to join the squad ahead of the Czech game.

Netherlands vs Scotland Betting Advice

The excitement will be building in both camps with the big kick-off just days away now. De Boer and Clarke are likely know what their starting line-ups will be for their opening group games but these next couple of games will be a chance for players to impress and potentially make their way into contention. With 26 players available to them it’s certain that two very different teams will take the field between this game and Sunday’s.

Key Facts – Netherlands vs Scotland Betting Tip

  • The Dutch are approaching their first European Championships since Euro 2012 when they lost all three group games
  • Scotland are set to compete at their first major finals since 1998 – a 23 year wait to play at this level
  • The Netherlands play their first group match on the 13th June with Scotland starting their campaign a day later

Friendly games are always difficult to weigh up but there’s no getting away from the fact that the Dutch have superior quality and will look to dominate the ball. Scotland will look to soak up the pressure but I expect them to come up short and for the Netherlands to win without conceding.
