Preview: The last two Supporters’ Shield winners are set to meet at Gillette Stadium this weekend in what has all the hallmarks for being a thrill-a-minute contest in New England. It should also be highly competitive. The Revs are coming off their longest unbeaten stretch of 2022, while The Union sit atop the East having lost once all season.

New England – Revs recently found another gear?

Standards were raised, and understandably so, after last year’s incredible exploits on their way to claiming their first Supporters’ Shield. Not only did they put together the franchise’s best-ever regular season, it was among the finest in MLS history. Their start to 2022 has been middling, however, a return of 15 points through 12 matches (W4 D3 L5) currently good enough only for ninth place in the Eastern Conference.

But they appear to have rediscovered at least some of the rhythm that took them to unprecedented levels last time around. Last week’s 3-2 victory on the road at FC Cincinnati made it four unbeaten for the Bruce Arena managed side, earning one more point in these games (8) than the eight which preceded them to begin the new season. Four of which coming across their three prior outings at Gillette Stadium (W2 D1).

Key Stat: After scoring three away to FC Cincinnati last time out, New England Revolution have now scored two or more in seven consecutive MLS matches, and in 10 of 12 across the entire season so far.

Philadelphia Union – Are the Eastern Conference leaders over their slump?

The Supporters’ Shield is awarded to the team with the most points at the end of the regular MLS season, and for some it is recognition for being the league’s most outstanding side that year. Philadelphia Union were the winners in 2020. This Sunday (or Saturday local time) they pay a visit to the team who inherited the award from them, a New England outfit that blitzed everyone in its path last year.

But not this year. So far anyway. In fact it is Jim Curtin’s Union who set the early pace, which was ferocious. Yet, unsurprisingly, it couldn’t be sustained. Since opening with five wins out of six, Philly have only won once in seven attempts (D5 L1) but still lead the way atop the East – a point better off than NYCFC. Finally putting an end to their six-game winless slump with a 2-0 success in Portland last time out.

Key Stat: The Union are still to fire a blank away from home in MLS 2022, netting at least once in all six MLS away matches so far (W3 D3). Four of these matches saw them net exactly twice but never more.

New England Revolution Vs Philadelphia Union Betting Advice

I’m cutting straight to the chase. Over 2.5 Goals looks extremely generous. We’re talking about the past two Supporters’ Shield winners. New England have hit 21 in 12 games thus far, scoring at least twice in 10 of those matches, which includes the last seven in a row and each of the last three at home. They’re also a team in form, having made it four unbeaten (W2 D2) with a recent 3-2 triumph in Cincinnati.

New England Revolution Vs Philadelphia Union – Key Facts:

  • Just three of the last ten MLS meetings between the clubs contained three or more goals, while none of the last four featured a Philadelphia Union win.
  • Goals could be forthcoming on this occasion though. New England Revs are looking to score at least twice for the eighth league game running, while Philadelphia Union found the net across all six away league games this season, netting twice in three.
  • Philadelphia Union midfielder Daniel Gazdag is a big price to score in New England. The 26-year-old Hungarian has 7 MLS goals in 2022, six of which were scored away from home.

Philadelphia Union are finding the net at a more modest rate this season, plundering 18 from 13 games. However, they’ve only failed to score once all season and none were on the road. Just 23% of matches went Over 2.5 Goals, but this is down to their outstanding defensive numbers with Over 2.5 climbing to 50% away from home. I’m not so sure even their backline can keep this red hot Revs side in check though.
