New York RB Preview – Will Red Bulls make it five straight wins in New York?
This is Gerhard Struber’s first full season in charge of New York RB and he will be looking to improve on their performances from last season, albeit they made it to the playoffs and eventually eliminated in the quarter finals by Columbus Crew who went on to win the MLS Cup. Struber was in charge for the last six weeks of the campaign so this is essentially a fresh start for him and his players.
New York finished sixth in their conference last season and they’re currently one place worse off than that heading into this match.
Their record for the campaign stands as five wins and five defeats from their first 11 matches which points to an inconsistency which they will have to mend if they are to creep closer to the leadings teams in their conference. Struber will be hoping that three wins in their last five is the start of that. Struber also led his team to a first away win of the season when beating Orlando 2-1 at the weekend.
New York’s home form has been very good and they are looking for a fifth straight win in New Jersey. They’ve kept three clean sheets in their last four wins so confidence will be high they can get another three points and go level on points with their opponents.

Philadelphia won the Eastern Conference in 2020 giving them their first Supporters’ Shield but they were unable to go all the way and win their inaugural MLS Cup. Union, like their next opponents, could only manage to the quarter-final stages of the playoffs and were perhaps undone from a lack of experience competing at that stage of the season.
Jim Curtin has been in charge of the club for seven years and there’s no doubt this is his best group of players. The challenge is building on that and sustaining their place as one of the best – not only in the Eastern Conference but the MLS as a whole.

Union are currently third in their conference, five points behind leaders New England. They lost their first game in nine last weekend when going down 1-0 against Nashville. That stretches them to three games without a win on the road following draws with Chicago Fire and Atlanta.
Philadelphia had the best defensive record in the whole of the MLS last season and although they have conceded more than they would have liked of late they are again a team built on solid foundations, conceding less than a goal a game on average.
