Newcastle United will be desperate to break out of their recent poor form on Wednesday night when they play host to Everton at St James’ Park in what is fast becoming an emergency situation for the north-east club.
Six defeats from their last seven have plunged Newcastle into the relegation dogfight as they sit in 16th place, just two league places and two points above the bottom three ahead of these midweek fixtures in the Premier League.
As the ongoing saga of the ownership of the club rolls on behind the scenes at St James’ Park, The Magpies are finding life back in the top flight very difficult, not least due to manager Rafa Benitez being unable to strengthen his squad from when they achieved promotion from the Championship at the end of last season.
Newcastle have lost their last three on the trot at home amidst an overall record of 3-1-4 9/11, including Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to Leicester City which dampened their 125 year celebrations somewhat.
Everton continued their revival under new manager, Sam Allardyce, in Sunday’s merseyside derby away at Liverpool as they grabbed a valuable point in a 1-1 draw, and whilst at times it wasn’t pretty, and in the first half, extremely lethargic, The Toffees showed they’re made of sterner stuff in the second half.
That’s now just one defeat from their last six matches overall in the Premiership, and the confidence and self-belief are now tangible within the squad and they now occupy a much more acceptable mid-table position.
However, with an away record of 0-4-4 6/17, there’s plenty of room for improvement on the road, but they’ll fancy their chances against an increasingly nervous looking Newcastle United outfit here.
