It’s been six years since Newcastle United were in the Championship, but following last season’s disastrous campaign in the Premier League which ended in relegation for The Magpies, a new saviour has risen to help guide them back into the big-time.
Former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has helped his side to second place in the Championship after a blistering run of results in recent weeks, and although he couldn’t stave off relegation last season, it looks like he’s got his side firing on all cylinders now.
Early defeats to Fulham and Huddersfield Town wasn’t the start Newcastle were planning, but they have since put together a five-match winning streak with wins over Reading, Bristol City, Brighton, Derby County and most impressive of all, a 6-0 away win at QPR during the week.
Visitors Wolves have experienced the opposite in their Championship campaign so far this season after a promising start which saw them unbeaten in their first four matches which included a 3-1 win away at west midlands rivals Birmingham City, but have since slumped to three games without a win.
Defeats to Huddersfield Town and Barnsley along with a draw against Burton Albion will mean that confidence may not be at the level as earlier in the season, and a tough trip to St James’ Park with a noisy crowd beckons for Wolves here today.
In addition, Wolves have registered just two away wins from their last 13 on the road, so the writing appears to be on the wall for them this afternoon with perhaps a point being the best they can hope for today.
