Preview: Second-from-bottom Newcastle, without a league win in 2021-22, await a Chelsea side which recently put seven past bottom side Norwich City. Unsurprisingly, the Blues are hot favourites to make similarly light work of this assignment, having won this very fixture in two of the previous three seasons.

Newcastle – More misery for managerless Magpies?

Steve Bruce may no longer be Newcastle manager but the problems out on the pitch persist. Graeme Jones will take charge for the second time in an interim capacity, and will continue to do so until a permanent successor can be found. He cannot have been too enamoured by what he saw at Selhurst Park last time – even if his post-match comments suggested otherwise. Perhaps the 1-1 result clouded his thinking.

Newcastle were on the ropes for large periods in South London. So much that they were basically camped in their own half for much of the contest. Jones did touch on his team needing to improve with the ball, after ceding so much possession. Palace weren’t shy in creating chances either. Christian Benteke’s hapless finishing a big reason as to how the home side didn’t convert a dominant display into three points.

That rather fortuitous point – VAR overruled a late winner for the hosts – means the Magpies have gone their opening nine league games without a win (D4 L5) for the second time in the Premier League era. The visit of Chelsea, fresh from their 7-0 demolition of the only team below Newcastle in the table, Norwich City, is far from ideal then. Particularly with Newcastle so defensively porous here on Tyneside.

Chelsea – League leaders keep finding a way?

Last week it was top versus bottom. It resulted in a rout. Chelsea scoring seven without reply as Norwich were ruthlessly dispatched at Stamford Bridge. That was without a recognised striker, with Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku both out injured. On Sunday the current Premier League leaders, and reigning European champions, head north to St James’ Park to face the team second from bottom.

In theory then, this should be a sterner test, if only marginally. The Blues have a good record in this fixture as well. They have won away to Newcastle in two of the past three seasons, which is more than they managed across the seven previous visits to St James’ Park. Thomas Tuchel wasn’t at the helm for last season’s 2-0 win here but his record in Premier League away games since arriving is exemplary (W9 D3 L1).

This season, Chelsea boast ten points from four away league games. They have beaten Arsenal, Brentford and Tottenham to nil on their own patches, which is no mean feat, and conceded only to a Mo Salah penalty. Tuchel will, however, be wary of a repeat of that we saw recently at Brentford. When they were reliant on Edouard Mendy’s heroics in goal to record a potentially invaluable 1-0 win (xG: BRE 2.16 – 0.31 CHE).

Newcastle Vs Chelsea Betting Advice

Thomas Tuchel looks set to be without his only recognised strikers once again for the visit to St James’ Park. Not that it affected them in any way last weekend as they thrashed bottom side Norwich 7-0 at Stamford Bridge. Ominously, Newcastle sit one position above the Canaries, in 19th, and prior to last weekend had conceded more goals this season than any other Premier League team.

Newcastle United Vs Chelsea – Key Facts:

  • Winless Newcastle (D4 L5) host league leaders Chelsea (W7 D1 L1) at St James Park on Saturday having lost two of the past three home meetings between the sides (W1 L2).
  • Since the start of last season, Newcastle have conceded more goals in Premier League home games (43) than any other current top-flight team. Ten have come in the four home fixtures to have taken place this season.
  • Chelsea are yet to concede from open-play in a Premier League away game this season, winning ‘to nil’ at Arsenal, Brentford and Tottenham but drawing 1-1 at Liverpool.

Another big win seems on the cards then. Although that would go against the grain of this fixture. Chelsea haven’t scored more than twice at St James’ Park in their eight visits since a 3-0 win in December 2011. Moreover, all three of their away league wins this season were ‘to nil’. Meanwhile, aside from a wonderful acrobatic finish from Callum Wilson, Newcastle didn’t look like scoring at Crystal Palace last time.
