Newcastle – Magpies had wings clipped with Wilson setback?

Since signing for the club on a season-long loan, midfielder Joe Willock has more goals (5) than anyone from his parent club Arsenal during this same period. The 21-year-old’s influence has been huge, with late goals against Liverpool, Tottenham and West Ham worth five points to survival cause of Newcastle (W10 D9 L16). He also opened the scoring last time out, setting the tone for a 4-2 win at top-four chasing Leicester.

Willock has now netted in four successive appearances and, after news emerged that 12-goal top-scorer Callum Wilson is set to miss the remainder of the season through injury, is now the leading goalscorer in this team, with five, of those currently available to manager Steve Bruce. Rather ominously, Newcastle are without a win whenever Wilson has not been in the side this season (D4 L5).

The good news for the Magpies is that they can approach these final three fixtures – against Man City, Sheffield United (h) and Fulham (a) – in the knowledge their participation in next season’s Premier League is no longer under threat. Moreover, they were finishing strongly regardless. It is one defeat in their last six league games (W3 D2) having lost only once at St James’ Park since the early part of February (W2 D3).

Man City – League leaders more at ease on their travels?

And so the procession commences. Despite suffering a fifth league defeat of 2020/21 at home to Chelsea in their latest encounter, Man City (W25 D5 L5) are champions of England for the third time in four seasons – the title confirmed on Tuesday following Leicester’s victory over second-place Man Utd, leaving Pep Guardiola’s side with an unassailable 10-point lead with three games to spare.

These final three fixtures – successive away matches against Newcastle and Brighton followed by a home meeting with Everton on the final day – will now be used as preparation for the Champions League final. That is, of course, a rematch with Chelsea, the side which condemned them to their fourth Etihad defeat of the season last time, as City shipped two goals for the fourth successive Premier League home game.

It is now six home league games without a clean sheet for Pep and his team, while it was the 23rd game in a row in which they somehow avoided drawing (W20 L3). Conversely, they have only conceded once in the last five away league games, having also eased to an eleventh-straight away win with a relatively straightforward 2-0 victory at Selhurst Park last time out on the road against Crystal Palace.

Newcastle United Vs Man City Betting Advice

In recent times, the Magpies have been something of a thorn in Pep Guardiola’s side here in the North East. It is difficult to imagine that being the case on Friday, however. The hosts are missing their leading goalscorer for this, failing to win any of the nine league games Callum Wilson has missed this season, and were uninspiring in their recent home loss to Arsenal which ended a five-game unbeaten run at St James’.

Newcastle Vs Manchester City – Key Facts:

  • Here at St James’ Park, Newcastle are unbeaten in their last two Premier League meetings (W1 D1) with Manchester City, the hosts scoring twice in both games.
  • Man City did win 2-0 on their latest visit, though, a 2-0 triumph in last season’s FA Cup. Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling with the goals, the same combination as in the 2-2 league draw here in November 2019.
  • Pep Guardiola’s side are also chasing a 12th-consecutive Premier League away win, with seven of the previous eleven away wins accompanied by a clean sheet.

While there may be nothing riding on this game for either, Newcastle are finishing the season strongly while Man City will be keen to mark their first outing since being crowned Premier League champions on a high. I expect Pep Guardiola to recall his big hitters, and I suspect this will be enough to register a 12th-straight away win – seven to nil – against a home side already safe and missing their star man.
